    Johnson 150 questions

I just bought a 98 Seaark ZX200 with a 98 Johnson 150 model number J150ELECD. I test drove the boat and it seems to run fine. It started easily, idled smooth, and wide open pushed the boat to 51 mph. I am new to big motors and I am wanting to make sure the motor is sound and serviced. The local shop is book for weeks so I would like to do it myself. They suggested a compression test, new plugs, VRO removal, lower unit oil change, and a new water pump. I think I can handle all of that but I don't know much about the VRO system. I have searched on this board and I don't find much about them. I have read they have problems but I am not sure if I should disconnect it or not. Any suggestions on the VRO system? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Read this then decide for yourself. http://continuouswave.com/whal....html if after reading that then do a search on the disconnecting of the VRO and you will find the instructions.

Thanks ChampioNman. I think your think is bad but I found the VRO info here http://continuouswave.com/whal....html. The "scare tatics" mentioned in that article are right. The local shop had me so worried I haven't put the boat in the water yet LOL! I do have the System check gauge and it goes through the light check sequence and warning beep when the key is in run. What service manual do you suggest? I think I need to invest in one I am also installing a water pressure guage this weekend for more peace of mind. Also, could you point me in the direction of where I could find all the specs and oil requirements for the motor? Many thanks

Your motor is still current as far as ordering the factory manual from the dealer, that is the way to go. It is your choice on the VRO, I am an advocate, but with the increasing cost BRP is pricing themselves out of the parts business.
