    Installing a hot foot

While I have my carpet out I'm going to install a hot foot in my boat but want to install a piece of plywood to the floor then mount the foot to it after I install my new carpet. I want to glass it in. Any pointers from the fiber glass crowd? That is not one of my forte's.

Not my forte either but I just finished making a deck extension out of plywood which I glassed. My first recommendation is to get a bunch of rubber gloves and plenty of wrags, that stuff gets everywhere! Shouldn't be too hard of a job. Probably need to coat the plywood with resin and let it dry to seal it. Then glass it to the floor. Hardest part for me was working the air bubbles out of the cloth (I didn't have the proper roller).

Fred, are you looking at screwing this plywood down to the existing floor, for possible future removal, or do you want to taper the edges and glass it right to the existing floor?

Being that you are working with wood, epoxy resin is the best to use, but polyester resin (available just about anywhere) will also work. It just doesn't have as good of wood bonding abilities. Make sure you completely seal the plywood that you will be putting down, including the underside. If this is a permanent installation, I like to install the plywood wet (on the 2nd coat), so it acts as a type of glue to the old floor. I would also taper the edges of the plywood, so it is more of a smoth transition into the existing floor. You can then follow with several layers of fiberglass cloth around the perimeter, staggering each layer.

Lay the carpet down and you are ready to go!!

Fred I don't know if you're against it but I got one of Lou's plates. It worked great. EVen though it is made for a bullet it fits and follows the contour.

Why would you want the plywood? Is it just too mount the hot foot to?

Yes I want it closer to the side of the hull and don't want to install it on an angle.
Mike I think I will taper it like you suggested. I'm probably going to use Epifane brushes and Smith's CPES resin on it $$$ but looks like it is worth is because it penetrates the wood.

DG I'll make sure to have plenty of gloves and I'll make sure to get the proper roller.

Aaron I'd get one of Lou's plates but even it is says Stroker my ChampioN will only go so fast .

ProcraftMike is right on with the install.....chamfer the edges so your carpet will lay smooth with no air pockets.

These are the type of finned glass rollers to use.
