Definately need a high speed. Heres the link that will answer alot of you questions. I did this and my gel coat came out great

get a variable high speed buffer, then just simply start out slow, work the compound, and gradually increase the speed... you will see and feel when it is right!

oh, if you have the harbor freight buffer, setting 3 is usually where i end up when using 3M perfect it rubbing compound.
