How do I repair a hole in engine cowling?

I've got a hole in the engine cowling. It looks like a nail head was pushed through then pulled out. It isn't a clean hole, there are fibers from the glass. I'm new to fiberglass repair and need some insights. I know there's always the sticker option.

Hey Brian...if the hole isnt very big..you can get some Bondo fiberglass resin..just put some sort of sticker on the inside of the cowl to keep it from running out the other side till it sets up..fill the hole..let it dry ..sand and paint..good as new

Marine Tex is also an option to use for repair.

even better...i took some old V6 decals off my cowling when i got it painted. those decals were screwed on. my new sticker decals didn't cover them all up. go to lowe's and get some tiny plugs to put right it in. i can take some pics if you would like...it looks factory....IM me for more info. about a 1 dollar fix

Thanks guys. I can't really just use a plug since the hole isn't a clean cut. Should I fill it as is, or just cut it out and clean the edges. I think if I leave it and fill in with marine tex or equivalent some contact with existing pieces of the cowling will increase rigidity. I don't have a paint booth or equivalent, it's on a 2002 VMAX so the shine is nice to have. Is it worth sanding and painting the whole thing. Not sure if one could blend the painting to be un-noticable.

Second. There is a gouge on the rear transom (Skeeter with sponson like ends). It's through the gel coat and I can see the edges of the fiberglass. The dealer says it's fine (waterproof) but isn't the gel coat waterproof, and the fiberglass there for structural rigidity. I'd think the water will start to delaminate the fiberglass if left untreated. Should I sand the edges and fill with gel coat or put something on top of the fiberglass first then gel it over. I'm not sure how to match the paint/flake either. Any pointers there?

    Thanks again.

It's a tough call on the hood. Do you have a pic that you can post? On the transom, if you can see glass strands, you need to have it repaired. Water will eventually work its way in and cause additional problems. For a small repair, Marine Tex will work here as well. I think it even comes in different colors.

A pic of both areas will help us see what you are dealing with.

I'm supposed to pick it up Friday. Dealer says all compressions are 100 exactly. I said BS and I'll bring the compression tester to check before I sign the paperwork. Once I get it home (if compression is good) I'll get some pics. Thanks.
