    Trim/Tilt no power - 150 Faststrike

    Greetings,

    I have a Johnson 150HP Faststrike V6
    year:1994
    model#: J150GLERA
    serial: G 03551862

trim motor was acting a bit funny today.. when i'm trimming down i can hear a rubbing sound with the trim motor sound.. would happen sporadically, not all the time.. then it just suddenly died.. don't hear not motor/hydralic sound, all 3 trim button location (bow, throttle, motor) don't work,

    - fuse = good
    - connection = good
    - battery = good

luckly i didn't trim my motor up when i turned off the engine, was able to get on plane and low and behold the trim button now works?@! so off we go, reach or next spot, as we slow down and stop i try to trim it up doesn't work, turn off engine and tried again doesn't work...

this progress throughout the day and i thought it was a temporary fix that can get me through the club pike tourney.. well our last spot was a bit shallow and i had to trim the motor up to about Tilt to avoid damage and muck.. well when leaving i realized i screwed myself by trim to tilt cause the button wont work and i can't turn on the engine without the lower end submersed in water ..

    so again.. did the routine,
    - fuse check
    - connections,
was able to get a club member to tow me back to launch, pulled her up and had a look under the cowling.. the trime relays are definitely clicking and working, connections are good.. all we could do is manual release to tow home..

got home 2 hrs later on the highway, as we unhitch i jokingly said to my buddy.. watch its gonna work now .. hit the trim switch and its working like a champ.. so my buddy says he suspect a short somewhere or grounding problem

I inspected the motor more and found this metal wire broken in the pivoting section, can this be the problem or is it more than just a broken what looks to be ground wire?

    thanks in advance

well, if you re-ground that wire, does it work?

hard to say now that I'm back in my driveway, it works no matter what now, if the wires are touching (grounded) or not, only when I'm in the water things go bad

I would suspect the trim motor's brushes are wearing out.

I think you nailed it dude!

I returned to my boat today (have it parked at my folks place) and the trim was working fine so i kept playing with it and got it to lock up again, how i got it to lock up might be random but i left the built in transom saver bracket and tilted down until it locked in place, then kept going for about 10 secs and lost all power.. can't hear the motor winding anymore..

So i took the butt end of my screw driver and gave it a hard knock with the trim button pressed.. as soon as i hit the trim motor it started working! couldn't get it to lock up again, will try again tomorrow..

that would explain why when it locked up on the water this past weekend, everytime i started driving it would start working

would anyone know the Trim motor part # i need to order and maybe a good source to order from?

    Thanks !
