Oh Crap!

Ok, after returning from fishing last night, noticed a small (size of a silver dollar at most) spongy spot in the floor of my 78 Cajun Mk IV. This is right in the corner by the seat on the port side gunwale against the floor. I first thought it was the top cap and some screws were loose but no, it's definately the floor. I DO plan on new carpet sometime between now and the end of the year. Anybody got an idea on how to fix it PROPERLY without having to rip crap up?

Well I would like to tell you that you won't have to tear anything up. The real deal is that you won't know until you get into it and have a look.
I started to just recarpet. When I started there was a situation that couldn't be left the way it was. Had to remove the whole floor or risk a total loss in the future. Start getting yourself mentaly prepared for a "tear it all out" project. If it is less than that If it is one of those projects where you do need to do a lot...you will be ready for it. Because of the age of the boat I would be ready for a big workload. Post the questions here, this is a great place to have advice on what to do when you have run into a problem. Good luck,Worth it all in the end though.

I agree that this is a fantastic place for asking/answering questions! I have been threatening to split the top cap and hull for some time now, not because of anything obvious but because 30yrs of dumping water into the bilge cannot be a good thing! However lack of $$ has kept me from doing so....and now I have this....well, guess it will wait until I get the $$ saved up to recarpet and then I can see what I am facing. I just that it's something easy and inexpensive.....I'd hate to see my rig sidelined over a little ole problem. BUT, after doing remodeling on 3 houses I also understand the "might as well" rule!

And as several folks have said on this forum "Beats the price of a new one."
Since you have remodeled houses you know that you won't know till yoiu get into it. Go for it!
I like my old boat and that is why I did the repairs I did. sounds like you feel the same way about yours. Fiberglass and epoxy aren't that mysterious.

Wow this story sounds familar, I got a 77 Cajun, and I had a soft in the floor also. After ripping up the floor to repair. I found all of my stringers were the consistency of chocolate pudding.

this is the start of week 3 and it time for epoxy and glass

PLEASE post some pics! I've decided (well, the wife has actually) to let her go until this Winter at the least. Still lot's of good fishing left to do and I've got to catch some fish before she makes me sell the boat

had that problem in a '80 ebbtide. First time I replaced part of the floor, second time a little more.

Third time I decided lets do it all, remove all the old wood. Well found a rotten stringer. I've decided to buy another boat, but only because I want something bigger anyway. Personal experience you'll be better off to replace the whole floor at once, and check out your stringers in the process.
