Hey Mike, when we did my brothers boat about a year ago, we used contact cement. It really wasn't as "messy" as you may think. Just a thought.

We did ALL of his carpet and lids and IF I remember right, it was only a couple of cans. I'll call him later and see if he remembers exactly.

I wouldn't use anything but contact cement. The other glues take forever to dry and don't hols as good.

I agree that contact cement is the way to go. One caution though....make sure the two
surfaces are lined up exactly before they touch. Otherwise you'll have to tear it off and
    start again!!!

I used contact cement for the lids and the areas where the carpet wasn't going to lay flat. For the main areas, I used Roberts indoor/outdoor carpet glue. That was several years ago and I have not had a problem.

The contact cement is great, because it is instant bond, but it is difficult to get the main deck areas flat, without working them after you lay the carpet down. That is why I went with the indoor/outdoor glue for the main deck areas.

I have just gotten finished w/mine i used WELDWOOD contact cement on everything...it worked great and not too messy...and i had time to move the peices around a little after i set them in place...Another tip is large flat surfaces use a rolling pin from the kitchen, you know what you use to roll out dough it works great....

When I did mine i ordered the Henrys over the internet, came in 2 or 3 days. I used Henrys on the deck and contact cement on the lids. I used clothes pins, the spring type to hold the carpet where it folds around the lids.

just make sure it's waterproof and use lots of weight to keep it making contact pressing down.

I agree with this........I just recarpeted my boat last winter. I used flooring adhesive on the floor (before I learned about contact cement) and it actually started to work it's way back up through the carpet - now I have some discoloration and you can see the glue on these spots. that and it took forever to dry!

I switched to contact cement for the lids and decks and MAN ALIVE! That stuff worked SO nice!! It really wasn't messy at all. Just be sure to do it in a well ventiliated area and NOT in your basement where the fumes can travel to the furnace and through out your entire house......then your wife will scream bloody murder at you...........TRUST ME!
