    Carpet Weight

Is 20oz carpet still the standard for redoing a bassboat? I've seen some a little heavier but I'd think that would be harder to work with.

Bruce, I think 20 oz is pretty common. Anything heavier and you may have difficulty closing your lids.

I used 16 oz. and it looked great and did not wear at all in one season...

Ya have a good point Tyson. It'd be a good idea to get a few samples from Lowes or your local carpet retailer and do some experimenting with them. Save a few bucks with the 16oz. You're not going to see an appreciable difference in the 2.

Yea T-Rex is right. I went from a 20 oz up to a 22 oz and now I have a problem w/ my lids. They're closing just a little too tight. I'm hoping that after the carpet wears a bit things will be fine.

I think i might have paid $200.00 total for all the carpet tools, glue and 16oz carpet at Lowe's. Maybe $200.00, i think it was more like $185.00 total..Either way, i like the carpet

Get a sharp razor blade and gently shave the lid edges to shorten the fibers. The heavier carpet will be softer to walk on and will outlast the 16oz. If you are going to do all the work of recarpeting, go with the thicker carpet. Nothing wrong with 16 oz but I can feel the difference in a boat.

Are you saying to go with a 20oz or heavier?

what he is saying is that...If you are going to recarpet the boat yourself and take the time to do it, then buy the 20 oz. because it will last longer than 16oz. I was on limited funds when i bought the 16oz. fished a whole season worth of tournaments and the carpet still looks new...I would imagine that you could get 3 seasons out of 16oz and 5 seasons out of the 20oz or more...your choice really and your budget...you will pay the higher price for the 20 but it all depends on your situtation...

this will give you an idea on the prices...these guys are very reasonable

    Re: Carpet Weight (Bassman24)

I put 24oz in my Bullet...Yeah, I had a problem with the lids closing for a while...It has been in there since fall of 02 and is still thick and plush as the day I put it in. I have also discovered it is pretty comfortable to sleep on..... It looks great, hides the dirt real good, if I recarpet it again I will be putting 24oz carpet in her...
