i love the ol'mighty hudson. in spite of what some say, have caught of my biggest fish in her. smallies are good too, though quality smallies have dwindled a bit. my wife caught her first smallie in the hudson on a purple/blk yammy that was 4+. last i knew 3rd sat in june opened up bass fishing but regs have changed since. capt can help ya north of the dam as i have never hit that. the areas i fished when i was still in NY was as far south as Poughkeepsie and as far north as Stuyvesant/Rensselaer area. boat traffic sucks wind. the cruisers don't give a rats that you're fishing, jet-ski's are a little hazardous, watch for freighters-they throw wakes that'll pop up out of nowhere and the winds/tides can ruin your day in a hurry if your not paying attention. last i was on the hudson, patrol's have picked up alot between the coast guard, local, sherriff's, state's and encon. ya can get into some stripers all year long though after spring they'll be schoolies and haven't caught any over 15lbs after the primary run. as far as what the bass eat for me and typically where, that's a secret![]()
do not get discouraged if ya blank or get into the dinks. it takes a little ciphering to figure her out and don't let the tidal water get ya in a tizzy
Hey Rick, pick a day this spring and come on down! I'll show you some Hudson River fish![]()

Hey! let me just barge right in on your conversation.
When Mark can't make it drop me a email or PM and I'll show any of you guys some good spots on the Hudson (and tribs) below the Troy lock (tidal water). I would show you some above the Troy lock but Mark might get madso I'll let him show you.
FYI & FWIW, there's no "legal" bass fishing, even catch & release, on the Hudson River (and tribs), below the Troy lock until the official season starts in June. Catch and release above the Troy lock any time.
Locks usually open early May. Not real sure of the PCB dredging status this year. They started digging some last year but it didn't seem to bother the fishing below lock C-4 and south. I see Matt's from Waterford, he should know.
Most guys get them anyway, but this year you NEED a fishing license to fish the (tidal) Hudson River. ...and an additional and separate marine recreation license ($10) if you're going to fish for stripers.
Jeez, sorry, didn't intend to write a book.
Mark, let me know when your ready to go. I found a new killer bait for Saratoga.![]()

how's the fishn' been at 'toga? haven't been there in a few years
Same as you probably remember, .... weekends it's take a number. Week days are a must if you're planning on keeping your temper and your sanity.
I went a half dozen times last year did pretty good. Once with Mark and we did very well .... actually HE did very well until he finally gave me one of his baits. Still lots of weeds and boat traffic but the fish are there, they're just a lot smarter than they used to be.
""Catch and release all year long.""
No, not all of the Hudson is open to catch and release all year long. Much of the Hudson below the Troy Dam is closed (no C&R) in late fall and winter (closes Nov. 30). Check the regs.
Im always up for fishing unless I have to work. Saw Mark's pics from last year on the Hudson and it changed my mind about that river lol
