Rod mentioned that he was going to go fish Massabesic and it brought this to mind. I wonder how many of you know how it got it's name.
Back in the late 1700's there was a large plantation that was on the shore of the lake, running from the traffic circle by the yacht club all the way down to North Londonderry. As some of you may know, slavery was still legal in the north at that time and this plantation had many of them.
One day the governor of NH rode down in his coach to have a meeting with the plantation owner. Driving up to the main house he saw an old slave sitting on the porch. He asked him, "What is the name of this lake and why isn't your master out here to greet me?"
Being old and a little hard of hearing, the old slave didn't hear the first part of the question. He just looked at the governor and said...
"Massa be sick".
