    Exhaust gasket?

    Hello all,

I recently inherited my dad's 1990 Javelin with a Johnson 175 GT. We fished many tournaments in this boat in the 1990's and am looking forward to many more years with it. The other day I started it up to knock the cobwebs out of it, and noticed a small stream of water coming out of what I think is the exhaust manifold (the area on the back of the engine). How involved is changing the gasket on that? It seems pretty accessible and don't know if there is more involved than I think it is. Also, anyone know where to get that gasket? I'll try to post some pictures of what I'm talking about when I get a chance to get the cover off again. Thanks for any help!

Try tighten the exhaust cover bolts first to see if that stops the leak. If that don't cure your problem you can get parts at this web site.

If you can't run with the big dogs, just stay on the porch.

Thanks! I'll try tightening the bolts. Anyone know what they are supposed to be torqued to?

Post some pics. Water comes out of most of the exhaust areas normally

I'll try to get to it this weekend and post some pics, but another storm is on it's way. Fill up those lakes!

You have 2 gaskets on the rear jacket. The GT175 is a hoss for a X-flow but not quite a 2.6 GT. Bottom bolts are a pain to get to with out dropping the belly pan which is also a pain.

Thanks Champ. I hope the weather allows me to monkey around with it a bit this weekend. I'll try to post some pics and show where it's leaking and I'll try to torque the bolts to see if that remedies the problem.

Well, I torqued the nuts down some, but the leak is still there:

This picture shows the stream of water hitting the spark plug boot.

My motor is model number VJ175SLESE. Anyone know the part number on that gasket, and if this is something I can do on my own?

Okay, I looked the part up on the BRP site. Can someone confirm for me that what I'm looking at is part number 0323217?

That's what I came up with, part available. 11.68. I defer to ChampMan as he said something about two gaskets?

There is an inner and an outer on the exhaust plate. You will need two if you remove the housing and a can of gasket remover and a scrapper. A light coating of gasket sealer will finish the job with the housing torqued to spec.

I see it now, 0323217, the outer, and 0329495, inner gasket. Of course the outer is $11, and the inner is $56 for the 175. Ouch!
