    Conway "Walk Around" Ponds?

Back in Maryland I kept a single spinning rod and a small tackle box in the trunk for when I came across a small (1/2 acre to an acre) pond where I could stop for a 1/2 hour and throw a few lures without having to hook up the boat. Could have been crappie or bass or both.

Are there any such ponds around Conway? I've looked around and haven't found any but that doesn't mean they con't exist.

Dan, there are lots of ponds around here, but you'll have to get out into the county. Not sure around this area but up around the Atkins/Russellville area where I grew up everythings just about posted for no trespassing anymore. You've just got to find out who owns them and go ask for permission.

Yeah, I was afraid of that, Jason. Seems like I do see a lot of "No Trespassing" signs out there in the country. Back east there were far fewer of those, mainly because there was so much public land as opposed to private farms and such. I was hoping for something close in to Conway. Otherwise, might as well hook up the rig and trailer on out. Thanks anyway.

There are a lot of ponds and small lakes built by the Game and Fish all over the state. Some are on timber company property, some on federal, and some on state property. I know there are several in the Hollis/Jessieville area and a few in the Mt Ida/Pencil Bluff area. I'm sure there are some around Conway also. You may be able to call the Game and Fish to find out more. You can also start by looking at a good topo map of the area. You might even show the map to a Wildlife Officer in your area and have him point out small waters that are open to the public. Nobody is gonna know those back country areas better than a good Wildlife Officer due to all the time they spend out there checking deer, duck, and turkey hunters and if you are friendly and polite with those guys they will usually help you out a bunch.

    Dan,
Give Wooly Hollow Park a try. It is north of Greenbriar off Hwy 65. There is a small lake in the park that has some good bank fishing at times. Most ponds are on private property around here, but if you ask you'll get permission to fish alot of them. A word of caution, purple paint on trees, posts, etc. is legal no trespass posting in Arkansas.

Hey Jim, this was on the KTHV website this morning.. So much for Wooly Hollow.. Man we need rain!!!

The Woolly Hollow Lake in Greenbrier has dried up. Lack of rain, and high temperatures have caused the water to evaporate. Little patches of water are all that remain.

Local fishermen hope for rain. They must find other areas to enjoy their favorite pastime until the lake fills back up.

Hey Dan, just thought I would let you know, I talked to Skeeterjim a few minutes ago and he told me that he drove by Wooly Hollow to check it out and its not completely dry like that news report stated that I linked to. might be a good time to go walk around it and fish, they should be good and concentrated.

    Hey, thanks, Jason,

The Log Cabin Democrat had a story about the draught and had a photo of the lake, right at the fishing pier. There was no water in sight but I told the wife that it seemed unlikely that the lake was completely dry. I'll drive out there and take a look this week one day. Never been there anyway so it'll be an opportunity to see something new.

By the way, I and my wife drove over to Petit Jean State Park last week. WOW! What scenery! That's about as beautful a place as I've ever visited, in the states and in Europe. We spent a day there and gotta go back soon.

Thanks again, I'll let you know about Woolly Hollow.

Well, went out to Wooley Hollow yesterday and, sure enough, the lake isn't gone. It is down about 15' but still plenty of lake there. The problem with walking the shoreline is that it's pretty much wet muck or real steep shale banks and it would be a slippery, slimey walk. Like most lakes it's age (around 75 years old) it's silted badly. The only deep water is down around the dam where it's still around 30-40'. Guess I'll look around some more.

As low as Brewer is these days you could probably walk around it for sure.

boy isnt that the truth. I havent been out there in a couple of weeks, but the last time I was out there it felt like I was backing off the ramp with my trailer on the south ramp. I wonder if this little bit of rain we've had has brought it up any?

Man I hope so. I'm surprised you can even launch off the South ramp. I like the North ramp better.
