    Reel bearings?

Do you all think that the no. of bearings claimed in most reels is on the liberal side. I've took a few reels apart claiming a certain amount of bearings and there is no way. Have any of you got any thoughts on what is claimed and what is actual. Without naming any manufacturers it's almost as if each needle in the anti reverse bearing is counted as a bearing in itself.

Did you also take apart the handle alot of reels have bearings in the knobs that counts as the total amount of bearings. I know the shimanos I have taken apart are right as advertised. What kind of reel are you talking about?

The # of bearings in a reel does not make it a good or bad reel. Just because one reel has 10 bearings does not make it better than one with 6.

Didn't think about the handle knobs. Thanks.

What is the "1" mean when you see something like 6 + 1 advertised for the bearings.

The 6+1 usually refers 6 ball bearings and +1 roller bearing. Roller bearings are on the drive shaft.

    Re: Reel bearings? (rolloman)

The +1 is anti-reverse or roller bearing.

There are bearings in weird places on some..like Quantum. They have 2 on the gear shaft alone. One at the base and one on the outside of gear case. There also is a bearing on the worm gear. Plus one in each handle knob.

I personally never found "11" that Quantum claims.

And bearing count has no bearing on how a reel works. Its really bearing placement that matters. Do you need bearings in your knobs? IMO...no...not at all. 3 total on the spool shaft is better than 2.

    Quantum:
    2 spool bearings
    1 tension cap
    1 end of drive shaft
    1 roller bearing
1 on the handle side of the roller bearing
    1 on the worm gear
    4 in the handle

Yeah, the difference in 6,7 and 10,11 in actual reel performance ain't much...as all those 4 extra will be in the handle.

Daiwa has some of the more interesting placement i've seen as they make their upper reels with pinion gears that are supported by 2 bearings. No other bass reel I know has that arrangement. I'd think it's gotta be one of the reasons their reels (zillion in particular) can be just as powerful cranking as a shimano HEG without the gears necessarily being larger.

Also, the 7.3:1 reels in the zillion lineup that I've used aren't beasts to crank when I get a fish on or try to throw even a small crankbait on them.

The more bearings a reel has, the more places there is stuff to go catastrophically wrong if one gets dirty/worn though...as I recently had a Daiwa Zillion with ALL of the bearings being corroded (while everything else in the reel was like new ?!?).

you'd be surprised how "sweet" a 4 ball bearing handle is/fells

    Re: Reel bearings? (rolloman)

I took a Quantum PT completely apart a couple weeks ago. It had all of the bearings it said it did. Some of the higher count reels have 4 in the handle alone. 2 inner and 2 outer on each knob. Anywhere from 2-4 on the spool and a couple more.
