Alabama Rig- Rod/Reel/Line/Rig
Alabama Rig- Rod/Reel/Line/Rig
Read several articles and I see everyone recommended a Heavy Flippin/pitch rod with 65lb braid. I may not go that heavy on the braid as I don't plan on throwing heavy 6"+ 1/2 - 3/4 oz size baits up here.
I just bought a Pheonix 7'6" heavy flip/pitch 3/8 - 2 1/2oz Recon and it is one sweet rod. Made in USA and Lifetime warranty reg $179 I picked one up at Indy show for $135. Pared it up with Lews TP and its one sweet light setup for the money.
Curado 201D w/6.2:1 gears, a 7'11" H flipping stick, and 65 lb braid is my choice.
You're throwing steel wire anyway, braid doesn't hurt anything and is a must if there's a chance of hanging up (and i'm not talking a good chance, I mean if there's a "Dumb and Dumber" one in a million chance). You can get your lures and rig back more often with braid.

didnt feel like making a new thread so im wondering what gear ratio reels are you suppose to use with the alabama riggs?
I havent fish the bamas yet but I have 2 rods that i could use for the riggs but would like to know what would be a better choice, first one is the Okuma 7'6 Hvy swimbait rod, and second is IROD 783 jr swimbait rod, I have a cardiff 301A round cast reel with a gear ratio of 5.8:1, do you guys think thats too slow of a gear ratio for using the a riggs?
Gear ratio will mostly like be a personal prefeence, based on the depth you are fishing and the weight/drag of the Rig you are throwing. I have mostly settled on a 6.2:1 Calais. I don;t think there would be anything wrong with a 5.8. My concern would be are you going to wear yourself out with the big round reel...??? For the way I have fished the rig, an "oversized" reel has not been necessary and would be overkill...for me...I am actually gonna give the Zillion 4.9 a whirl as well, just to see...
if you throw it anywhere that it MAY get hung up...you'll be glad you had heavy braid on it. I've broken snaps and swivels on mine to recover the rig...I may not go that heavy on the braid as I don't plan on throwing heavy 6"+ 1/2 - 3/4 oz size baits up here.
