    topcoating painted reels

what are you guys using? what needs to be done to fit the parts back together after topcoating or is that not an issue to contend with? I know my standard etex will not work for this. Now that I finally have a beater reel to play around with, I'm thinking about giving this a try. I saw in another post that someone said they used 30 min. d2t. Is that the way to go or should I go for some type of auto clear or what? The repainted reels I have seen lately have been inspiring and now I want to give it a try. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Hey Luke.....I use D2T because it is thicker and sets up quicker..( thickerer & quickerer ) . I leave the side covers on but take off the handle, star drag, spool tensioner and spool out. Tape any expossed surfaces especially the line guide and worm. After your paint dries I crack open, just a bit, the side plate on the handle side. This makes future access to internals of that side much easyer.....Ask me how I know that.... .....Remove and clear seperatly the spool access side cover, careful not to get clear on the matting surfaces. Just brush on the clear, add glitter to taste. Two light coats will be fine. Be sure to keep an eye out for sags in the first 30min of dry time by turning....Have fun....

    automotive clear.

too many issues to encounter with epoxy. if you dont spread it evenly, you will feel it and if you do and it sags.. just another problem. because its thicker, it may not go back together evenly, then you have to sand those high spots in the epoxy down. if your mix ratio isnt right, it will feel sticky in some spots. you could possibly brush on a little dirt or some old epoxy if your brush isnt thoroughly cleaned.

i'm not saying that auto clear is the only way to go. im sure others have done it different ways.. its just the medium i use.

.....I did not mention I cut the D2T with acetone, about 5-10 drops. It prolongs the set up time and lightens up the viscocity(sp)....I also cut the d2t when clearing my baits
