How to paint small dots with the airbrush

I know I am never ending with these questions. Been trying to paing the crappie pattern the Tom shared with us. Did four baits today, three of them I scrapped and will restart. Once came out ok. I do ok on them until trying to do all the small dots. I just cannot do it with the airbrush, I tried doing them with a toothpick and small paint brush but they just do not look right. What is the trick to doing this with the airbrush. Everytime I try I just get splattered paint, ughhhh.

Sounds like your paint is to thick or not enough air pressure. What kind of paint. The paint could also be drying in the tip causing the splatter.

I am shooting Createx at about 25 PSI. I can thin it some if needed as I do have the illustration base to do that. When I splatters it seems more like the paint is two thin and the air blows it all around once it is on the bait.

i'm not very good at it - but i used a couple very small drill bits (different sizes) and drilled a bunch of little holes randomly through a piece of plastic clamshell packaging. Just sprayed right over it. Works ok.

Best bet is to get a white sheet of plastic and sit down for a couple of hours and practice, not trying to be an a** but everyone expects instant results and to be able to spray like alot of these guys who have done it for years. The plastic will be slick like the bait and help you to learn to control of the amount of paint you let out...it's kinda a finesse thing to learn how much air with how much paint without making it crawl everywhere No offense intended

I figured practice would be a lot of it. I do just what you said, I have a piece of mylar that I use to paint on when I am practicing something new. I have tried the dots for months now and just can't get it. I can do bigger dots where I am able to hold the brush a little further away say 4 inches or more but on the small dots where I think I need to be closer just can't get it.

I use a iwata gravity feed brush and turn the air pressure down to about 15 lbs and push the trigger down to start the air the slowly pull the trigger back. I will have my brush within an inch of the bait

You should be able to do this if you have a double action brush.

Once you get where you can do the dots good then you can speed the process up

one other tip is to think about the amount of paint you want to let out, I also depending on the size of the dot sometimes put my brush right on the bait however the trick is to allow only enough paint to come out you need for the darkness desired if its a really dark spot it may take me 3 pulls for paint on the same spot, shoot a little, dry, shoot a little ,dry, shoot more.....this sounds time consuming but I'm doing it all at once never leaving the bait, kinda one movement its hard to explain but its something waterbase forces me to do

What tip size do y'all have on your brush, I have three I can change a .2mm, .3mm, and a .5mm. Am trying to do it with the .3 and just struggling. I do like everyone says push down to get air, then slowly draw back to get paint but still get splattered. I have been trrying to get this technique down for like six months and it is starting to really tick me off. I can do bigger dots, just not real small ones like on that crappie pattern.

To me it really sounds like your tip is clogging. Does the paint come out of the brush really smooth?

I think you are right on the clogging. I was just out practicing and had it going good for a minute or two then the paint stopped flowing. I have the Createx illustration base should I thin the paint out and see what i can get. This is driving me nuts.

I assume your using createx black for the dots. The black has small pigment and usually shoots fairly good. Here is what I do; I cut the paint with a little windex and add a few drops of retarder. Turn the brush down to 15-18psi. Unscrew the cap off your airbrush so the needle is exposed. This will allow you to shoot needle thin lines or dots. Dont forget the retarder, Good luck......
