First rod and rod wrapper & stands.

Well I built a rod wrapper a few extra stands for drying and wrapping first, then moved on and built my first rod which happens to be a crank bait rod . I am pretty happy with how it came out. And when I get the $$ I will build my first spinning reel for Senko fishing.

I built the loose stands from some old mahogany, then the wrapper is aspen, thread arm is rock maple and mahogany. The aspen is a couple of new 1x2x6' and 1x3x6', while the mahogany and maple are pretty old scraps. I just took ideas from others photos and did a couple of twists on securing the thread and stands. The stands on the wrapper and the thread holder are secured in place with old drawer pulls, nice and smooth no rough edges. The screws running up through the bottom have plastic sleeves over the screw to help stability and not tearing up the wood. The stands also have dowels out the bottom to keep them in the track. I had all the screws washers etc. except the long screw that holds the thread which I ran through some recessed screw holders. Since I am a bit of a pack rat I had one spring from who knows where, and the other I made by spinning stainless steel leader wire around a piece of tubing.

The rod; 8' Rainshadow CB80MH, split grip, Minima seat, FORECAST BLACK/TIBLU CASTING GUIDE #8, FORECAST BLUE RING FLY 2 #2, 7 #6 done in a spiral wrap. (I originally spaced it out and layed it out for top mount only but I was convinced into doing a spiral instead.)

Hope you like the rod and wrapper/stands.

Looks real good. What are you using for drying, ie motor or by hand? I was told you need to use a motorized dryer at like 6rpm. I also really like what you did with the for grip. Is that just epoxy with glitter or some kind of flake. Looks sweet.

I turned it by hand, and you better have some time dedicated to doing that. My wife has already said I can't believe you didn't build or buy a motor.... Well sounds like a green light to me!

And the front grip area is 3 colors of ultra fine poly flake (aka glitter) mixed with Flex Coat lite. It is 3 layers thick.

I couldn't see the pics early due to the firewall, but that wrapper is awesome.

A 6 will work fine, but I prefer 18rpm for applying finish. The faster rotation helps offset my shakey hands, so I get a nice perfectly straight epoxy edge around the wraps.

Of course, I usually wrap better with a cold beer or two and a football gamne on the TV, but the higher speed moter has really helped.

I like the faster motor for applying the epoxy also, however I use an old BBQ rotisserie for my drying set up. I cut the part that goes into the food down so that the handle fits up against the motor and with a little blue tape you can secure the rod handle into that handle. The rotisserie motor gets hot but I have been doing it this way for 9 years with the same motor and never had a problem.

    Nice wrapper and great rod.

Some of my first rods were so flashy and covered in wraps that they would blind you in the sun and tripled the weight of the rod.

I prefer the look and feel of the bear bones stealthy rods now. If I do ge the hankering to add a decorative wrap it goes on the exposed blank behind the reel seat. It helps balance out the rod.

I'm with you on that one Ron. Besides that, I'm just too lazy these days.

Nice looking rod wrapper and rod. I also used an old grill rotisserie motor for a dryer.
