    Rod builder's Question?

what happens when you take say a 7' Heavy /Fast and cut the butt to make a 6'8'' rod or a 6'6'' rod? I know this will move the reel seat up on the taper of the blank does it change the over all action of the blank?

It will make the blank slightly more Moderate in action. It will still bend the same distance down the blank (from the tip) but that will now be a greater percentage of the overall (shorter) length.

You will decrease the lure wt. range from the high end.

( say if it was 1 oz. to 3 oz. range...it will now be 1 oz to maybe 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 oz)
    I never had a \"10\".....but, one night, I did five \"2\'s\"

If you just saw it off and put a new end on it, the balance of the rod will change. You will notice it to be tip heavy. If you put a new reel seat and grip on it and move it up, you can take care of that. You can also add weight to the back. Be careful if the rod is in warranty. Any alterations to the blank will void the warranty.

Frank. Reeldoc was spot on. Shortening a rod will technically make it more moderate in action. You will NOT reduce power, you will just make it slightly more moderate. That being said, if we are talking about a typical fast action bass rod you will more than likely not notice the difference. I have cut up to 6" off of a heavy action blank and not noticed any change in characteristics.

    Re: Rod builder's Question? (Bassn81)

So if I got the facts straight, due to the shortening of over all rod lenght (power) the "Rato", inchs of lenght divided by inchs rod of flex mathamatically changes but "action" (how it loads up and moves the lure) of rod blank will not change?
Therefore actions like taking up line, moving the fish after hooked, and the way the fisherman manipulates the rod is directly effected but the mechanics of rod's ability to moving/throw a given lure, hooking time/efficiency changes very little.
thanks to all and glad your felling better Scott!
