    split grip

I know how to make a split grip handle, my questionis that I have a rod that has a strait handle. Most of the split grips I see have a little hump handle. How can I do this with redoing everything.

    Matthew.
Do you mean a hump like the daiwa rods?
Most split grip rods, especially customs, aren't humped. You can put a "power hump" in the grip if you want, but it's not necessary and personally I don't care for them.
Just take the straight one you have and cut the middle out of it.
If you want to make a split grip with a hump it's no easy task. You will have to take all the cork off the straight handle and buy cork rings that are not predrilled because the hole would have to be offset. You would also have to find a Weibe style reel seat to center to the offset cork. You could buy a Weibe(Super Sticker) handle kit from mudhole.com and spilt it, but you will still have to hand form the hump.
Go to Georges site and read his tutorial on split gripping rods.

I didn't know if you could just built it up somehow. I not a fan of the power hump handles (such as the BPS rods) I sanded mine done a bit and really like it.

    casting or spinning rod?
on a spinning rod try using the American Tackle Aero reel seat. its a casting seat, but accomplishes what you describe when used as a spinning reel seat.

You can make the hump, if you like. Personally, I don't care for them. Besides using the off center cork rings, you can remove the cork rings and replace them with 1 3/8" rings, then form the hump at the top of the handle. The cork rings will be a wider diameter than the typical 1 1/4" ring. The extra size will give you additional height behind the reel seat so you can get the desired shape. You will have to do this all by hand...not too tough to do.

Another thought would be to rough up the cork behind the reel seat with some 80 grit paper, then apply oak colored wood putty to the top of the handle. Let it dry then shape it to the size that you desire. Not sure how that will hold up under heavy use, but it would be the easiest tactic to take.

Let us know if you have other questions........George
