WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO APPLY POWDER PAINT? I DIPPED 15 HEADS YESTERDAY AND THEY LOOKED GREAT. UNTIL I PUT THEM IN THE OVEN TO CURE THEM. THEY ALL CAME OUT WITH PAINT RUNS.

A little too much powder coat would be my guess. When you heat the head up and dip it into the powdercoat you want to knock the excess off by tapping the jighead on the side of the jar or fluid bed, whichever you use. I also touch it up with my torch after I pull it out of the powder coat to put a gloss finish on the jighead.Hope this helps.![]()
I'm just getting in to the whole lure/rod making business but my guess, too, is that you applied the powder paint a little too thickly. I use as little heat as I can to apply the paint - pretty much just enough to make it stick - and then past it over the flame again. The result, as Richard said, is a hard, glossy finish that really doesn't require any additional curing.

I agree. I've just started using powderpaint, and it's very durable. I don't do a lot of additional curing on my lures either, but im also not making jigs, only spinnerbaits that arent typically beat on the same way.

Also my guess is you let them hand by the hook when heated. I had the same problem, than I made myself a rack where the hook itself slips in a slot so the lead portion stands straight up, cured all my problems.
Too much paint, try getting some christmas ornament hangers so you can hang them by the eyelet when curing.

Ditto on the too much powder. If you're dipping it in the jar, loosen the powder up by stirring it with a spoon handle, screwdriver, etc. Do that every few jigs. You might also be getting it too hot. That causes too much powder to stick to the head, also. I use a heat gun and give it about 5 seconds before dipping. It takes practice to get it right. For curing, I got a $20 toaster oven at Wally-World. 25 min at 250 works great.
The ornament hangar idea sounds good. I'll try that next time. Should keep the eyes clear!!
THANKS ALOT FOR THE HELP. LET YALL KNOW HOW THE NEXT BATCH TURNS OUT.
