hard bait help

I would like to paint some crank baits. I was using some enamel rattle cans and would like a protective finish over the top what would work?

evirotex epoxy works.................some even use devcon 2 part epoxy

do they self level or coat evenly. I got some crap from Home D just said epoxy and I brushed it on and when it dried it was like it beaded up not into complete beads but it left 30% of the surface unprotected and so it was lumpy. So will the epoxy you mentioned do the same?

I prefer the EnviroTex also. IMO stays clearer longer.
If you use the Devcon Epoxy make sure you use the 2-Ton 30 minute not the quick dry stuff.

I had problems with the epoxy doing that when I first started painting mine...the problem isn't really the epoxy, but it is the fact that you have touched the baits, and left oil on them from your fingers....make sure not to touch the paint when done, and it should be fine...I use latex gloves now for all applications....

BTW, make sure the epoxy you get is clear drying...most dry to a light amber, and will make a pretty bait look like crap....I just use the devcon 30 minute epoxy from wally world....make sure not to get the 5 minute quick dry....

E-tex or Devcon(30 min.) or Flex coat are all self leveling....but if you havent built a rotater similiar to the ones used to finish rods you'll have to spin the baits by hand with the devcon its not that bad but the other 2 dry a little slower and thinner which results in a longer spin time. Some guys get away with just hanging them bill up and letting the excess drip off. The problem your having sounds like what was mentioned after painting try your best to not touch the bait as you'll leave oil off your skin and cause the epoxy to repel from that area, rubbing alcohol ran over your fingers will cut the oil , also I know its summer but most epoxys dont like temps under 70*

thanks for all the help. I painted a couple of DT16s and they looked great untill the epoxy dried all stupid. I have some epoxy coming from Barlows.

Tell me more about the bait turning devices. Is it something you make yourself? Give me some ideas. I love tinkering with this stuff.

Where is a good source for the Enviro tex or Devcon? Also what type paints do you use. I am new at this and the water based paints are not working to well. Seems that in order to spray them well you cut the paint then they load up and run.
