    question for rusty

    maybe you can help me rusty. i know this is a set up question butmaybe you can help. i bought a 285 magnum with a 175 johnson. i had a 25 tempest plus
    put on it and i am blowing out coming out of the hole and i am having cavitation breaking over. what would you do to the setup to try and fix this? every time the engine gets to 2800-3000 rpm,s it blows out . thanks

    Smalljaws, i have the same rig, 04 285 magnum, 175 johnson, 6" pro-hi jacker.
    i run a 25" tempest and 25" trophy. with the tempest i am at 3 1/2" below pad, i use 3 smaller vent plugs. it does blow out a little, i am usually loaded pretty light
    and the rpm is about 3500 to 4000 when it hooks up. i like the trophy better because of the added lift it gives, i run 2 holes wide open and 2 holes with smaller plugs and i raise plate to 3" below pad. both props yield about the same speed 65 to 68 gps @ 5500 rpm on good days. hope this helps

    Do just as he said. I preferred the 25 Tempest with the small plugs on my '04 285 I had last year. Don't let it scare you when the motor spins up like that. That just means the prop is doing what it is supposed to. The vent holes are designed to allow the exhaust gases to escape through the holes at low speed freeing the prop to spin the motor into it's power range and get you going quicker. Mine would spin up to exactly what mjm stated (3500-4000), but then it would dig in and go. My boat had an amazing holeshot. You have the best 18' 6" boat on the market. Enjoy.

    You can always try different combinations of the PVS Plugs for that prop. You may want to try a solid plug in one location just to see how that works. The good thing about the PVS Plugs is the ability to make subtle changes and get it just like you want it.
