Throw them anytime, I fish jigs year round. Just throw them and get some confidence in them, and you will be hooked. A jig is definietly my go to bait. You can pretty much fish them on or around anything in any situation. Get football head jigs to fish deep points or where you would generally throw a Crig.
Do you have any jig rods setup or do you need to set them up?![]()
I have a crig setup I guess I could set up to jig fish. Do you fish it deep, shallow, grass, rock etc...Im completely clueless
Thanks for the response

All of the above and some, the only place I don't pitch a jig is christmas trees around piers. You most likely want get it back.
I use a 7'6 flippin stick shallow for pitchin and flippin, a 6'6 med heavy for deeper fishing. Best advise I could give is put three rods on the deck of your boat with all jigs and fish all day with nothing else.
Baseball -go to the top of this board and look under the thread that is pinned and is titled Don Applegarth's best tips. In this thread you will find an article he wrote "A beginner's guide to jigs". I think there is also some information on the first article under this thread on jig fishing as well. Hope this helps you.
I throw a jig anywhere I would throw a t rig
Cheaper to keep a kid in tourney fishing than paying attorneys to keep them out of jail !!
Do yourself a favor. Go fishing and only take a few jigs. Force yourself to fish them. Once you gain confidence in them you will want to fish them everywhere.
so the way you all learned to jig fish was by only taking jigs out with you until you started catchin fish on them?
Had to force myself to throw them... years ago my partner was killing me with them, can't beat em... join em![]()
Im going in the morning and throw it for a cpl hrs....see what happens thx

Just to add to what the others have said...I struggled for a long time trying to get the feel for jig fishing. The complex where I work has a small pond with lots of fish in it. I brought my jig rod with me to work a few times this spring and caught a few fish during my lunch break. All it took was a couple of fish out of that pond to give me the confidence I needed to fish the jig. I took that confidence out on the real waters and kept fishing.
Before I knew it, the jig became my main confidence bait. I caught more quality fish on the jig this year than any other bait. It's all about getting the confidence.

listen up baseball, you are entering a dark world...use caution... restraint... go see a priest... cut up your credit cards... the jig world can be an addiction that will haunt you till your grandkids get done paying for them...
sure you start with just a few, and some trailers... then some new fancy trailers, then you get some different sizes...some football jigs, some finesse jigs, then get on the net, these are best, those are best, hand tied, super color, free shipping! then gotta have a light jig rod, a heavy jig rod, a punchin jig rod, how bout those 30$ spools of Japanese line!
come back in 3 years and tell us about the basement full of unused jig stuff...
Cause when you throw that jig and chunk in that tree for the first time... tick... bam, four pound bass... you are done...![]()
gotta go, gonna hit the basement to see the jig stuff I got... might have to order something... pure evil...
lol I went yesterday and didnt even try. Im sorry. I should have though cause it was sllllloooooowwww. I could make myself do it.
LOL Capticeman your so right! I never used a jig until I went with a local pro and he smoked my A$$! On what? A jig! I had to have them he gave me some of his hand tied jigs and I tried them more n more each time i went out and now I have over 60 of them i take every trip. I got into tying them which costed even more to get started i think i may break even in years to come hehe. I guess I cant say that they have won me a decent amount of money so what can I complain about.
Baseball, go fish those jigs and fish them like a Tube or darter if you see fish Bustin surface swim them jigs are more than what i always thought they was. 20ft water bouncing the bottom waiting and waiting and waiting. I fish Jigs in 2ft of water and less at times fish love them!Goos Luck![]()
the only thing that discourages me about fishing with a jig is the fact that i get hung up a lot on snags and i lose my jig often. I dunno if its something im doing wrong or does everyone have this problem? Are there any tricks to getting them loose?
Get 6 black and blue half ounce and six 3/4 ounce...that way you can be sure to get the "feel" thing down...a 7 ft light but heavy action rod (Kistler LTA or Loomis or whatever) and 20 pound test works well in most situations.
Get a 3 packs of Zoom blue sapphire trailers and start fishing...do a search for Jig Fishing (tips) and the Web will provide 3-4 helpful articles to print.
After you catch a couple of quality fish you will be convinced (ruined) and just go from there as far as spending hundreds on "better" trailers and "better jigs" and "better colors". Drives u nuts.
Most guys suffer thru these stages for a couple years and settle on 2-3 jig colors and 2-3 trailers.
I did.
Good luck.
