Rather than ask "what line do you use for this?", I would like to hear your thoughts about braid in general. What applications do you think it is perfect for, and which would you never use it on?

I've only got braid on a couple of rods or I should say reels. Heavy braid 65 lb on a Castaic for flipping, 40 lb on a Curado and 20 lb on a spinning reel. I use the 40lb braid on a 7 medium action rod for spinnerbaits. Same rod, add a 15/20 lb test leader, you can cast a Redfin a mile and still get a good hook-up. I don't use braid around rock.
use it mostly for pitchin and flipping into heavy cover, like grass or brush / laydowns. Other than that, maybe on a c-rig.
At this point, I took the braid off and have gone almost exclusivly to 12lb Stren floro. It works well for me in most - not all but most- situations I fish right now, but I'm not fishing that heavy grass stuff right now. If I do get to take a trip with a friend the I try to have it ready on a reel or two.

I only use braid when flippn or froggn around grass, lily pads. etc...It cuts through grass and you can land alot more fish with it. Mono or floro will get more bites but you can not land nearly enough. Hope this helps....

Used to been at the situation but now, using FC Leader to my PowerPro, still able to cut grass and not losing sensitivity and lots of power to land fish. Hardly use Mono anymore........only with my stickbait my mono comes into the picture.![]()
I use it when pitchin jigs to heavy cover and for c-rigs. Thats about it for me
I never use it. Spooled it up once for a tourney and could not keep that crap from backlashing. I don't know what the freak was going on, but it just kept messin me up. (yeah, I know, it's me, not the line) But I ain't got time for that! Never had line act up that bad. It was 50lb spiderwire stealth. I'll keep flipping laydowns with 17lb fluro. I don't fish heavy grass or throw many frogs.
I'm sure I'll give in and try some more eventually.

I like the spider wire orginal braid for jigs, cranks, worms, and spinnerbaits. But most of the time I am fishing off colored water with current around wood or rock. With the braid you will need a good rod with a fair amount of flex to compensate so you can play a fish with out worring about getting slack in the line.
i use p-line spectra on most all of my moving baits(cranks, spinner baits), and my flipping rod. i know alot of guys do not like to use it on cranks because there is no stretch and causes them to pull the bait out of the fishes mouth when they feel a strike. if you use a good medium action rod you should be ok. i also throw my baits into alot of heavy cover(another reason i use braid). i am usually fishing in water with less then a foot visibility, so i can get away with the braid in alot of cases.
20lb on cranks and spinner baits
65lb on HEAVY cover and thick weeds
I really like using braid when throwing the bakubaits apopalypse. Beings braid floats it works great for this weedless topwater poper. And for fishing the slop. Not sure on how we ever fished the slop befor the invention of braid.
I like using Berkley Fireline Crystal for making really long casts on a 7'0 or 7'6 heavy rod and dragging a football head jig on rocky points and rock piles. The line is semi-transparent, so its like flourocarbon and braid mixed together. I really like the sensitivity; you feel every little nick. I also like using it on my swimbait rod and my "grass" flipping stick.
Good luck![]()
I mainly use it for frogs and flippin/pitching. However, because it lasts forever I'm going to be using it on all of my rods next year. This will really help in the amount of line I use and I'll end up saving alot of $$ for now on.
Horny toads and the like are the only time I consider it a must.
Does braid float better than mono for topwater, or is that brand dependent?

I used to use braid for most everything but now I only use braided line on my Carolina rigs and when I'm fishing hydrilla, milfoil, etc. I don't care for it much around wood cover and, as someone already mentioned, it's a definite "NO" around rocks.
My impression with braid on topwater baits has been mixed. It works really well on buzzbaits but not well at all on most others. Even though it floats, it's so limber that it tangles really badly with pop-r's and walk-the-dog style topwater lures.
