    Split rings....

Does everyone else put these on the front of their topwaters (ie devil's horse, poppers) or just me. My old uncle, great fishermen by the way, said I was wasting my time and should just tie a loop knot. But I say use a split ring and a stronger knot...what say you....

I experiment, no particular rule except to use a ring if supplied on the lure. They test them with and without. Sometimes I'll use a loop knot with a split ring, or a loop know without it. Sometimes it works best tied directly to a line eye. Occasionally I'll move the line eye to the "chin" (or add a second line eye) to make it leap out of the water. I do that with Spooks mostly. I want two things out of the lure. To work a good as possible, and to be different.

I add them to Pop-R's and also to Spooks, and Rapala minnow plugs. I prefer the way they allow the baits to swing back and forth and I feel more confident in a split ring than in a loop knot

I put them on my spooks and sammys, they work good and it makes it easier to walk the dog with.

I use them on Spooks and Sammy's but not on Pop R's. I want the chugging, spitting action on a Pop R and the split ring is not the way to go.

The BPS Rick Clunn rings are oblong shape and just seem to work better for me. They are really inexpensive.

I never use both a split ring and a loop knot together, the loop knot has a much higher chance of getting into the split, breaking and losing fish.

I change out the hook attachment to split ring attachments when possible (e.g. zara) - to attach line I worry about line in split.
