Evinrude Ficht ????

I am looking at a boat with a 2000 Evinrude 150 Ficht on the back of it. It has about 250hrs on the motor. The person said it runs great and he just had a tune up done on it. I heard good and bad things about the ficht

My question is this motor a reliable motor? It has 250hrs on it.

What should I be looking for or question should I be asking this guy?

Or should just stay away from the Evinrude ficht and look for something else?

you will get a dozen answers with "RUN" and another dozen that will tell you it will be great, so, to sort out what to do, get someone who knows these engines well to have a good look at it for you, take the "just had a tune up" with a grain of salt, ask for service recepts from a dealer outlining regular service, try to find out if it has ever been rebuilt, if not and it has gone this long, it will continue to do so (probably) if all checks out, it will be fine, but beware, sometime down the track, you will want to sell/trade it, and you will be faced with what you are going through now, but from the other side, as the owner.

Can you quantify bad design of a 2000? Or is this just I have a buddy that has a friend that know a guy who heard??

I have Ficht on my Stratos, 2000 150 hp. I have had some problems, nothing major by any means. I have less than 50 hours on my motor. I love it. It is very fuel efficient and uses very little oil. If it has made it to 250 hours and has good compression, I wouldnt be scared of it. I guess it would be nice to know maintainance records and if has ever been in salt water. I'm sure you realize its used and at any time something bad could happen, that goes for Mercury, Yamaha and the others. Good luck

I bought a ficht a few years ago without doing my homework. I wish I hadnt, it blew and I know there are people who say some are OK, but if it was me I would stay away, I still have the bad taste in my mouth.

It's my understanding that 2000 and after they are all okay. They had some bugs in the smaller block ones 1999 and previous.

My father bought a 1998 Ficht 175 new...It blew up on him twice, both times repaired under warranty...He was by NO MEANS hard a the motor. It was just poor design, I bought the boat from him and kept it a year thinking the problems were solved, at his expense....&gt;WRONG. I had to shell out over $1500 to fix the fuel injectors.

If it wasn't one thing it was another that kept falling apart on that Ficht motor...

MY PERSONAL experience says STAY AWAY from the FICHT!!! It will cost you regardless.

And I've got a bud with a 99 150 Ficht on an 18' Triton STILL hauling azz, never a motor problem......... All in the initial set up I still believe. JMHO

Same here, 1998 Johnson 175 FICHT Faststrike with 310 hours and still runnin strong.


AS Bassmeister said I think it is all in the original set up and Pinned Head Update.

i have a 99 150 with about 130 hours on, no major issues with it, plus it friggin moves!

I'm running a 2000 Ficht on a Javelin R 19 and it's been good to me. Great gas milage fires up every time and runs like a scalded dog! 62 gps at 5600rpm's. In the 4 yrs. i've owned it have changed the plugs once per year ,ran xd 50 and yearly water pump replacement. Put a new lift pump on it a while back and that's it. I would get a history check on just to be sure though. For what it's worth the Rudes and Johnsons can't be beat and I've owned a couple of the Black anchors in my time!

There are too many boats out there for sale with motors that have a solid history behind them.

2000 175 Ficht here over 350 hours. Had to replace a throttle position sensor a few years ago. Runs great. XD-100 oil.

They all have their problems...some more than others!

I would buy an Ev/John in a heartbeat.....just not a Ficht.

I like the HPDI one!!!!

Thanks for the info guys, I do like the Etec and yammie. I will just have to find a used boat with one of those motors.

Close to 1000 hours now. Strong as day 1....
with only minor problems.
