If its sunny I'm going to have at least one nickel blade on unless the water is really murky. Then gold will get the flash. If its cloudy, my larger blade will usually be gold. Ihaven't caught myself treating selections any different after a storm, maybe I'm missing something.
The switch to spinnerbaits could have been due to need to cover more water and pick up 5 keepers, no matter what their size.
Why not use both. I have been using two blade colors since the first tandem spinner bait came out. Also don't count out painted blades either. They work very good as well.
I normally toss gold blades when fishing in the south after a rain, however, since I've moved to Florida and lots of the water is tannic acid colored, I use copper-colored blades and they haven't disappointed![]()
I'm with Ticman on the painted blades. On cloudy overcast conditions I've come to rely more on a double willow leaf blades in white as my go to bait..You get more visibility with painted blades when you have no reflective light. When I have windy conditions and a bright sky with stained water then I'll go with gold or a gold/silver combo. Clear skies wind and clear water I'll go with a nickel blade.
Painted blades for me all the time. I was lucky enough to fish with one of the best spinnerbait fisherman around a few years ago and he taught me some good lessons.Bright sun, clear water use nickle blades with green or blue metal flake.Cloudy, clear water white blades withe metal flake. And chart blades in muddy water.

I don't know about after a storm but a gold blade on the back and a nickel blade on the front is my favorite and best fish catching blade combination on a spinnerbait. Two gold blades would be my 2nd choice.![]()
I think I'd go with a colored "bleeding" blade over anything else. I've always had luck with them over gold and nickel, but I switch it up all the time.
I think everyone has made some good points and observations. Overall, in real muddy waters, go with the gold blades. I think the nickel blades are the best all around finish for any condition. 90% of my customers request nickel blades.
