UPDATE - UPDATE: '94 Evinrude 225 problem - long post need help please

    Rusty, ChampioNman, Witchdoctor, Seahorse:

If you could please read and give any advice….any/all comments would be appreciated. Sorry for the lengthy post, I’m just trying to give as much as possible on 1st pass.

RIG: ‘94 Evinrude 225HP Looper on ’95 Champion 202 DCX, no jackplate, 28p, 4 blade Renegade, single gas tank, VRO that works fine; (see lak100 post in Champion Boards on 5/31/05)

PERFORMANCE: last year, no gps, ran to 5500-5600 rpms. This year, ran to 60+ GPS, 5200-5300 rpms, some trim left. Ran fine, very good holeshot.

HISTORY: Purchased from original owner last summer, my first boat. Prior owner indicated a problem with idle…he simply choked as workaround to add fuel. This spring a decarb and tuneup, including new drain plugs as recommended by Rusty last summer (BBC post Q/A), my mechanic fixed the idle issue by changing idle/air jets from 30s to 27s. Engine ran great in spring; used boat about 1x per week running a total of 1.5 to 2.0 hours at 4800 – 5400 rpms over several days, plus idle and low rpm time. On one occasion I managed to get grounded on a sandbar off the Chesapeake; got sand up in cooling system, but H2O still was >20 psi at WOT.

BREAKDOWN: About four weeks ago, was running 5-6 miles on the Potomac at 5000+ rpms, came off plane, couldn’t get back over 4,000 rpms. Then shut down and couldn’t get over 2,000 rpms. Managed to get to a launch, engine would start but not go over 2,000 rpms. Then wouldn’t start at all. Took to mechanic (same wrench for all service and repairs), engine always starts (only time wouldn’t start was at Potomac launch) but can’t get to go over 2,000 rpms when trimmed down. Mechanic not located on water, so he tests on muffs, then I take to Delaware River.

    REPAIRS/MAINTENANCE - FIX ATTEMPTS:
    1. New fuel filter (wasn’t changed earlier, should have been)
    2. Cooling system flushed to clean out sand from grounding
    3. All carbs cleaned and rebuilt (last week)
    4. New powerpack (today 7/2) (no improvement)
    5. Note: engine is not overheating; mechanic tested with jump wires S.L.O.W. activated and horn sounded (today, 7/2); this has never happened on the water.

    CURRENT STATUS:
    1. Compression fine/even over all six
    2. In neutral, no load, engine revs fine
    3. Full trim DOWN, can NOT get past 2,000 rpms at WOT
    4. Full trim UP, can get to 4,200 to 4,400 rpms WOT
    5. Idle ok (700-800 rpms in gear), seems like a very slight cough, NOT a backfire
    6. When idling, choke causes rpms to decrease
    7. When trimmed down and WOT, engine runs at 2,000 rpms sounds like working very hard, but can’t gather enough steam to increase rpms. Only way to increase rpms is to trim up, reducing load.
    8. No changes to prop or setup since I have owned.

    WHAT ELSE SHOULD BE CONSIDERED?
Let me know if you have any questions on the above.

Thanks for your help on this and to your answers and comments on previous posts.

Re: '94 Evinrude 225 problem - long post need help please (lak100)

If I was going to make a quick guess (which I am) I would have to say one of 2 things is bad and my first guess would be the timer base second would be the stator, but I'd go with the timer base, based on your description which was very good thank you . I wish more people would put up an in-depth post like you and TexasHawkeye just have this helps us more than you know. OMC PN on timer base is 584586 and for stator 584643. They will just go bad and cause the exact problem you are describing. H20 Pressure still up in the 15-20 at 4K? If not I'd have him r/r the pump assembly.
I was going to say it is staying in SLOW mode but you said he jumpered around and got no alarms, he could disarm the SLOW system fo test purposes but sounds like that has already been done. Good luck and keep us posted. CM

Im with CM, check the ignition system for spark, with the plugs out, disconnect the throttle cable and advance the throttle while running the spark check......See if the link arm at the top of the linkage is still connected to the timer base.

Also remove the air box and check the throttle plates, see if one or more are not opening, the connector comes loose sometimes on the bottom two and they will not open.

One other thing that comes to mind, if the center flywheel magnet has slipped it could cause this but, most times the motor will idle high if this has happened.

Let us know what you find.

just for shts and grins, pop the flywheel or look up under it for cracked, chipped, or displaced magnets.

Also look at the black coils on the stator, 3 of them, and see if they are leaking a tar-like deposit from them. If so, change the stator, regulator/rectifier, add a '97 or later blow off valve, and get rid of any wing nuts on the starting battery.

    ChampMan Rusty , Witchdoctor , Seahorse :

    YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING!!

Bucks County, PA has a bunch of electric only lakes, but a 20 ft Champ looks funny in the small one close to the house...and the fishing is poor. So, I go out with my wife to run errands and stuff, just babbling about how I hope someone has responded to my post. I GET HOME AND ALL 4 (FOUR) OF YOU HAVE GIVEN CONSIDERATION TO MY PROBLEM.

THANKS, THANKS, THANKS. Boat will be back at wrench on Tuesday and I'll make sure to let you know the results.

My wife says: "Wow, so on a Saturday, July 4 weekend, these guys are there to help. Really Neat"

Have a great July 4, be safe if you play with firecrackers!!

Re: '94 Evinrude 225 problem - long post need help please (RUSTY63)

Rusty, could he have air in his fuel line? He stated that choking at idle decreased rpms but I had the exact same symptoms on my 2.6XP that he is having. When I hit the choke at idle it decreased rpms but when I hit it at 2000 it increased rpms. I had air in my fuel line. Once I cleared it out the motor ran fine. I must add that I was running an electric fuel pump.

I could not plane off without my wife and I both walking to the bow and then I could only reach 4500 rpm.

    Re: (Bassmeister)

    UPDATE:

Mechanic has confirmed that the flywheel has gone bad, loose magnets. He has a flywheel from a blown motor for $550 or a new one at $950.

Any general comments on the probability of the risks with the used flywheel?

I realize that the value of the used flywheel is directly set by the price of a new one....your comments: reasonable?

    Thanks again, Larry

    Re: (lak100)

Sounds like a fair price for the flywheel.

I would have no problem using it.

    Re: (lak100)

A dealer can order new magnets, if needed, or even just the epoxy kits. Most knowledgable mechs know how to replace those magnets there is even a kit for retaining them.

Make sure they bead blast the steel ring in the flywheel before gluing the magnets on.

New magnets are a lot cheaper than a new or used flywheel, as long as yours is OK except for those magnetic chunks that pop loose from rust.
