What is the purpose of the torque tab on the lower unit if running hyd. steering. Is it needed? see alot of boats without it. Might be a dumb question but I don't know.

Hey Levi, you don't need it with Hyd. steering. it's to help eliminate steering torque with cables.

I have a 96 225 Johnson, was told that the toq. tab helps with thw cooling of the prop. there is a hole that captures water and sprays it on the prop. I was going to do away with mine when I switched over to HD steering. Was told no by someone on BBC who is a mechanic.
Serves no purpose on most bass boats at all, especially if you're running your motor high enough to get the max performance out of it. And if you run a Tempest Plus prop on a Merc, you don't have one anyway, because the large diameter of the Tempest will not clear the torque tab.
Talked to my mechanic he says DO NOT REMOVE my motor has a pick-up tube on the tab that shoots water onto the gear casing for cooling. Learned something new today, There is hope for me yet![]()
I know my 150 EFi merc had a 23p tempest plus on it, and I ran both a flat tab and a regular one, and niether hit, but I do think the regular tab was made to sit farther back so it didn't hit.
