Mike my son has his learners. Will be driving this February. I guess all we can do is give them all the experience we can before they drive alone. Nobody can predict what other drivers might do to impact our families. It is scary!

Mike....Know the feeling....Best sound in the world, when my daughter started driving, was the sound of the Bronco's dual exhaust coming down the street....Never closed my eyes till I heard it....

I was in Todds office the day Jake and his mom wanted Todd to look at the truck.Todd asked me what I thought and and I told him the Bigger the truck the safer Jake would be.They left 5 minutes later to drive to Ala to buy it.Thank God it wasn't a subcompact vehicle.

I agree with you on that one.....wow, scary stuff Mike....I remember my dad, he took me to all sorts of different places to drive, off road like parking lots and wood paths, places where there were no other vehicles...and made me drive and drive.....we practiced slamming on brakes, if it snowed we went to a icy parking lot, if it rained, wet parking lots. I learned not to over react, swerving and learning my vehicle and how it would respond....

he gave me the confidence I needed to be ok and taught me to anticipate the other drivers moves and what would I do "if"...

to this day when I drive, I still play the "what if right now, what would I do game " & where's my escape path, or path of least harm to me and not my vehicle....

Heck, I even teach it to my rookies responding to calls, always be prepared for the worse and what you would do, play those scenarios in your mind...then you can handle most anything...

all you can do is teach him that its more important to be responsible, and alive, than it is to "show off" to his buddies....with the kids, it seems to be the "showing off and driving too fast" that we see more often in accidents involving young kids...

knowing you, and the kind of dad you are...I think Jake will do just fine....

will pray for his safety from the other idiots on the road...

I remember that being one of the scariest things I had to let my son do. We only let him drive locally, in a very small town. Then when he was a senior he reminded us that he was going to be leaving for college in Savannah Ga in a few months and that he thought we should let him drive on I-95! Still can't believe I survived that. Just trust him and yourself, and all will be fine.

Went through this with my two sons with only one small incident which was the other driver's fault. Wishing him the best of luck. He should do fine.
