    motor died again

Hey guys I just got back from the AP rally and my motor died. We were driving along and all of a sudden heard a tap. As I was slowing down there was a clunk and that was all she wrote. The powerhead was just rebuilt in November so I hope everything is ok. I feel it's the L/U. Should there be any play in the prop when the motor is off and boat is in gear? There is a lot of play in forward, and reverse. Also alot of movement if I try to push and pull on the prop (back and forth). The prop is not loose or anything. This is on a 1997 175 hp Evinrude Intruder. Thanks for your help guys...Best of luck, cause I ain't having any.

If you think its the gear case......Pull the lower drain plug SLOWLY......if metal comes out then you lost a gear case......If not, pull the spark plugs and look for metal on them.

Yea I didn't want to have to go through that whole mess again, even with a warranty. Mechanic says he will check it out. Repairs over $1,000 he recomends going with a rebuilt replacement. Says the ballpark will be $1,400 for that. Darn boats sure aint cheap. Gotta pay to play...

Thank God you are OK after hitting that stump. The good news is your insurance company is waiting to put on a brand new lower unit.

    Re: motor died again (Stratos282)

The lower unit on my 225 efi merc just went out. I had the same chips of metal as you. Had to have a totally new gut job......$2856.28...Only cost $2700.00 to have the power head built 3 yrs ago......Luckly for me, insurance paid for most of it....but I figure I've paid them about a million dollars over the years for trucks, cars, motorcycles, 4-wheelers, boats , and a house. Heck, its the least they could do ya know..... Hope your back on the water soon...
