Personally I have had great luck over the years with Kawasaki. One on my 2004 Hustler Super Z 60" has over 2300 hours on it. I also have a Kohler on my Exmark Lazar Z with the mower itself having over 2500 hours but the motor was changed at some point and not sure how many of those are on current engine.
I mow around the same amount of yard with just over 5 acre lot. Its like anything though IMO all about keeping things serviced regularly.
I would go with the Kawa engine myself. I had a Ferris ZT 48" cut w/ a Kawa motor for about 12 yrs, never a problem with the mower, engine, etc. I only had a acre to mow, but zero issues.
I've always had Kohler and haven't had any problems with them. Know several people with the Kawasaki engines that haven't had problems either.
My new mower has efi but it's only a year old so don't know the reliability on it.
Kawasaki all day every day.

Kawasaki lawn mower motors have treated me great for a long, long time.

Kawasaki over Kohler for sure

I'd go with Kawasaki. Kohler sold the engine business to some equity firm and we've seen how things like that usually turn out......
Kohler made the decision to focus exclusively on its kitchen and bath products. As a result, the company sold its energy division to Platinum Equity, which made it a separate business entity. Initially, it retained the Kohler Engines name, but early last fall, it was officially rebranded as Rehlko.
Kaw......if your only mowing 5 acres a year, that will be about 50 hrs a year. (Depends on how much you have to mow around)....change oil and filters once a year and you will be fine. I'm going year 13 on my 60" zero turn with the 24hp kaw. No issues at all.
After owning 4 different Kawasaki powered mowers over the years I’d vote Kawasaki all the way. Never had a minute of trouble out of any of them.

As much as I like Kawasaki (I currently own one-JD X590).
I’d get the EFi Kohler just for the fuel injection. So much easier to start and better overall fuel economy. And By the way, Kohler ain’t no slouch , their quality is right there with Kawasaki.
Kohlers were King in the 90's. The mower I got then we used, with no issues, for 28 years (gave it away 3 years ago and its still being used). Replaced with a Kawasaki (had options for either, but lawnmower tech said Kawasaki's were better. Havinfg used the Kawasaki the last 3 years, its definitely better designed than the Kohler we had (though the Kohler was from the 90's).
I have owned both brands long term. I would own either again without reservations....
In this situation i think i would get the Kawasaki just because its carbureted. When it comes to small engines i like to apply the K.I.S.S principle and a carb is a lot easier to fix at home.....
Kawasaki!

The lower your expectations are the lower the chance of being disappointed
There's lots of decaffeinated brands that are just as tasty as the real thing.
Hi Mike.
Some EFI's in mowers are just an ECM on a carburetor. Still a carbureted engine but electronic control for the fuel delivery. I have had a couple of Kawasakis and have never had a problem starting them. Personal preference. I'll probably never own another mower that doesn't have a Kawasaki engine in it. But that is my preference.
Kawaski without question. I'm currently running a JD Zero Turn 60" with a Kawaski for my 10 acre property and have been very pleased with the engine's performance over the past several years.
Kawasaki as majority have said.
