Bob's Marine can probably weld a new one on. They weld on nose cones for low water Pickups.

I would not, under any circumstances, consider welding a complete (or significant portion of) a skeg on a high-performance gearcase. There are very good reasons why Mercury doesn't offer them.

TH marine makes them. I have never had to replace one. There are a bunch of people I know that have. Never heard any of them say they had a problem with them.

Ok two guys say no way. Fine, give the reason so there is context. Seen many skegs rewelded. Never seen a problem.

Make that three guys no-way. If you search the terms "skeg" and "weld" you'll find plenty of context

I am a welder and machinists. Back in the day I repaired many skegs on lower horsepower engines. Knowing what I know now I would not! NOT EVEN MY OWN!. As far as the welding goes to many variables involved. The issue here lies in the material. The lower is a casted aluminum. In today's world the material is just not as good as it once was. If you were to find a weldabl. The filler metal would be of better material than either material, then replacement skeg is of better material than the lower. With the natural welding process we create a brittlness at the weld joint. In the day most skegs, fillers and skegs were of more Quality. As many has mentioned just to much horsepower these days. If you have insurance file a claim. For a welded skeg to turn loose at a rate of can an will cause loss of control. Justnot worth the risk!

^^^^ THIS is a pretty good explanation.

In my case, I'll consider skeg repair OUTSIDE of Warranty or Product Protection ONLY IF:

    1. The boat will never exceed 55 MPH on the water

    2. The boat's design and engine mounting height are such that continuous rudder control would likely remain even in the event the entire skeg were lost.

If EITHER of these are not accurate statements, I will not agree to repairing with a welded skeg.

Have I ever made an exception to this? Sure thing! I've welded the nose of a case, I've welded a dime-sized portion of the leading edge of a skeg (both Torquemasters). Neither were such that there was not any question as to the skeg remaining intact.
