    Price of steel

Heard a builder talking to my co worker yesterday told him they put an estimate in for a project 2 years ago and it was at 12 mil.. they just now go it approved and the estimate is now 10.5 mil. He said mainly because of steel but were other materials that came down as well

Two years ago, lead time on steel was still pretty far out. Depending on the type of steel, some of them were pushing 40+ weeks of lead time. 301 was around 6 I think with 17-7 being something around 30. I haven't been in the business for a year and 14 days, but I do know surcharges were rising at that time, maybe those came down along with some of the lead times.

That's awesome if stuff is dropping in price. Someone told me north of me gas prices came down some. I didn't pay attention what they were when I have been getting rides to medical appointments. And I haven't searched. I am going to look with a search. But if prices drop with lots of stuff, it would be awesome.

That's odd because we've just bid two large structural steel projects and we saw pricing increases of +/-15% from last year. We shove millions of dollars worth of commercial and industrial construction projects out of my office every year. I opened this office in 2005 and I've yet to see the first time where we've seen an actual reduction of total project costs for projects of similar scope vs pricing of the year before.

I wish concrete would come down. Around here 3000 psi is $160 a cubic yard. Limestone is is higher than concrete. Crazy high around here.
There's lots of decaffeinated brands that are just as tasty as the real thing.

Per Google, the average price of steel per ton in 2023 was $1500, now it is $960. My guess for the drop is due to the tariffs and the fact that China isn't buying American steel. The demand is lower and the supply is higher, so the price is lower too.

Don't know steel, but here in town, gasoline is $2.99 but Diesel is only $2.64. Last year diesel fuel was gold. Hope home heating oil goes down last year $4.99 delivered.

Maybe it’s time for a new supplier?

We don't purchase the steel. We design the buildings / structures and send them out to bid on behalf of the Owners to multiple contractors that in turn receive pricing from multiple fabricators. It's a very competitive process. We've had two large warehouse projects put on hold recently by clients due to cost increases.

I buy a lot of steel every year for Commercial and Industrial projects. Steel prices are down from 2021 numbers but have been going up the last 6 months.

The company i work for deals with massive quantities various plastics and paper. Our substrate costs are higher than ever, and getting worse. We're in crisis mode over here.

    I remember those days.

Steel is easier to get right now, but I don't know if prices are going down per se, but not going up or not going up quickly. We do a lot of carbon alloy steel and stainless steels at our machining facility and that supply chain has stabilized.

What does it cost to get slab concrete finished there?

When you say limestone is higher than concrete are you talking about crushed stone like size 57 delivered and spread on a driveway?

Not sure what form and finish cost these days as I have been out of the concrete industry for a long time.

Yes, I was talking about crushed limestone like 6/10 base, #8 or 57. Delivered it's more than concrete around here and the stone price does not include placement except the driver chaining the tailgate open to spread as he dumps it. A driveway formed for concrete 4 inches thick with a light broom finish is cheaper than the equivalent driveway done in limestone, at least around here it is.

Are they using river rock for the aggregate in the concrete ?

Yes, that's standard in this part of the country. You can get limestone instead of hard chert but it's a lot higher.

Here is a chart of what hot rolled has done in the past few years.
Depending on the month 2 years ago of the quote, I can see where the price would have been higher than compared to now.
