Replacing poppet valve on 1996 200 efi

I’m replacing the poppet valve assembly on my 1996 Merc 200efi. It’s a bit of an access issue but I removed the old one. Installing will be a bit more difficult and I’m wondering if putting some kind of adhesive on the gasket will help with aligning the gaskets. The old one didn’t have anything on it. It sure made cleaning up the mating surfaces easier though (just wiped clean, no scraping). Thoughts?

It says it needs 24hrs to cure. I’ll be running the boat 12 hrs after installing the new poppet valve. Any issues with that? It seemed to work without any (at least it wasn’t leaking) so I could try that first and come back and use adhesive if it’s leaking I guess. Someone mentioned removing the lower cowling to get better access. That would probably help but would rather not

Ahh. Come to think about it the lower cowling is only held on by a few bolts right? I replaced the powerhead a few years ago and remember removing a ton of bolts but that wasn’t for the cowling I don’t think.

Make your self a few alignment dowels from bolts. Hang the gasket on the dowels and assemble. Long 1/4 inch drive extension and a 5/16 wobble socket removes the lower cowl with ease
