Johnson 150 faststrike trim starts all by itself

On my 1997 Johnson 150 Faststrike, I came home from work the other day and the trim was just running in the down position. The skeg was digging into the concrete driveway, the only way to stop it was to hit the UP switch. The trim solenoids were just replaced 2 weeks ago, and it has been working perfect until this happened. The solenoids were both very HOT. After awhile the only way to stop it was to remove the down solenoid switch. Anybody ever have this happen? Any ideas or solutions?

Bad trim switch somewhere on the boat.

Replaced the bow trim switch, and have checked all the connections on the other switches. Everything looks good, even re-wired them all( except one on motor). Thanks for the suggestion. I will continue to look at these again, and may go ahead and replace the blinker trim switch next.

Replaced both relays 2 weeks ago and everything was working great. This is very puzzling, that it would just start running on its own. thanks for the tip.

I had the same problem, my short was in the wire leading from the throttle/shift lever. Take it off and pull the wires out to check the crimps.

fairly common problem it is almost always the switch, especially if you have those round black bezel ones, they bugger up reasonably regularly.

The switches all are usually covered with a rubber boot to keep moisture out. Check each switch carefully for a cracked boot, especially in wet weather, and as was said before a lot of times the wires in the shifter handle can become chaffed.

Thanks to all for the assistance. I located the problem yesterday. The new trim switch on the bow had a faulty terminal. Replaced it and all is good to go. There can never be enough said about the great members of BBC who give of their time to assist those of us when trouble comes a calling. Thanks Again.
