Region 7 Lake Gaston Tournament Results

    http://www.vafednationregion7....s.htm

Fished the Region 7 tournament yesterday. Extremely tough biting following excellent bite on Saturday. Caught 13 keepers in about 3 hours prefishing under cold, windy, cloudy conditions. Best 5 prefishing would have gone around 15 pounds not counting the 30+ pound carp that came on a crankbait. Caught the first 7 on a 3/4 ounce green pumpkin jig with a zoom twin tail grub trailer in 10-12 feet of water on brushpiles out in front of docks. Switched to a Rapala DT-7 Flat crank in red craw and caught the last 6 on windy banks in 7-10 feet of water. Was fishing mid lake in the front half of major creeks.

Sunday brough bright, clear, bluebird skies and shut the fish down compared to Saturday. Fished the same areas as Saturday, but changed techniques to match the conditions. Fished the brushpiles and rocky secondary points with a c-rig with a green pumpkin brush hog and the jig-craw in 10-12 feet of water. Ended up with 8 keepers, but only had 13 pounds. Never found any "kickers". Fish seemed to be relating more to the rocks on Sunday and the brush on Saturday.

It was tough, we had one of only three 10 fish limits caught. No kicker!

Just got back into town and was wondering about the results. Thanks for posting. Must have been tough with the some of the names (tough fishermen) that I see way down on the standings!

    Mike,

Entry fees are only $55 per boat. Pay-outs are low. They pay 15 places per tournament regardless of number of boats. 100% pay-back. $55x100 boats = $5500. $5 per boat to big fish = $500. $20 per boat optional big fish of year pot (fish must be over 7 pounds). I think 1st place is 20% (?) x $5000 = $1000 1st place. 10th-15th places usually only get $100 or less. Usually average 90 or more boats dropping off to 70 for the last tournament.

Must be a member of a Va Region 7 club to fish.

Re: Region 7 Lake Gaston Tournament Results (RobShaw1)

    Rob,

Extremely tough bite on Sunday. The fish were really active on Saturday with the heavy cloud cover and front passing through. I think a lot of people didn't adjust to the changing conditions. The bigger fish I was catching on Saturday moved on Sunday. I located a small concentration of keepers but never figured out where/what the bigger fish were doing. I caught 7 of my keepers off of a 15 yard wide rocky point. Caught 1 there in the morning, 4 off of it at noon and 2 more off it at 2:45. Caught a lot of shorts and several misses off the brush piles that were producing big fish on Saturday.
