    Repowering 2000 Triton tr20

I am considering re-powering my Triton boat because the power head on my optimax blew. I am debating on whether or not to put a new 200 v6, 200 v8, and a 200 suzuki on the back.

Wasn’t sure if anyone had put a newer 4 stroke on an older Triton, and what they went with and why.

Not many Suzy shops around me. I'd stick with Mercury and, by all means, get the V8.

Repowered my ‘03 Stratos with a new 2020 Pro XS V8. One of the best decisions I have ever made concerning bass boats.

Just put a 2024 200 ProXs on mine. Love it. IMO the wiring and connections on the merc are superior to the yamaha.

Last Sept. I repowered my 1999 TR21 from a '99 FICHT 225 that was running great, but no one would touch it for maintenance. Really considered the Suzuki, but there was only one dealer/service near me and I didn't get great vibes from them. I wanted reliability from both the motor and the dealer. The dealer I went with sold both Mercury and Yamaha along with Ranger and Phoenix bass boats. The Suzuki dealer didn't sell bass boats and I wasn't comfortable with their experience with them for rigging and performance. I went with the 250 Yamaha SHO and upgraded from a 6" manual JP to a 12" hydraulic. I've been very happy with the decision thus far. Part of the reason I purchased last summer was the extra 3 years of factory warranty Yamaha was offering at the time. I believe both Mercury and Yamaha have incentives through the end of March.

If your older boat is in good condition I think a repower is a reasonable way to go.

I repowered exact same boat last Fall with a 200 V-8 Pro XS. Drag boat like hole shot and then straight to 70+ loaded. Could not be happier, wouldn't be happy with anything else.

Do you want you boat to be as fast or faster than it was with the Optimax? Go with the Yamaha SHO 200 and flash it to a 300 then. If you want it to be slower go with the Mercury 200, and if you want it to be much slower go with the Suzuki 200.

The 200 V8 Pro XS with the Torquemaster gearcase is the way to go. Made in America and an outstanding dealer network.

Keep the same jackplate and start with a prop 2 pitches lower than your prop used on the opti setup. If you have a 25 tempest, go with a 23 tempest for example.

This is entirely correct on all accounts. EFI liked a 25 Trophy plus , V-8 is running a 23 Fury now, and a 22 may be ideal. Have not ran a tempest yet, almost can't imaging better performance that the Fury is providing.

Why not go 225? I can see not going to 250 if it has a 225 plate.

Max rated for this hull is 200 I believe, found a great deal on a new 200 Pro XS so that’s what I’ll be going with regardless.

appreciate the input from y’all. I’m looking forward to my 200xs getting installed later this week/early next week and will most likely put a 23p fury on it. My optimax liked a 25p tempest, and I’m hoping to get similar results to your boat!

I’ll just be happy to be back on the water for $6000 less than the Yamaha I was quoted for

I have had much different results in favor of the new Pro XS V-8.

What year is your Tr-20, when did you repower with the Mercury Pro XS V-8, what is your prop pitch, prop height and engine setback?

What results have you got? I haven't seen one yet that picks up speed by going from a 2 stroke to a 4 stroke of the same HP unless the 2 stroke wasn't set up well, seen plenty that lost speed though.

My results were reported above in this thread. Can you provide the details on the boats you know that are losing performance ? And on those boats how did the hole shot and mid range compare?

Also let us know the changes that were made in prop type, height, and pitch, and engine setback, when the 4 stroke was installed. This really affects performance, and is very helpful to those here looking for ideas and advice.

Sure, would you like Triton examples or other boats as well? If you repowered from a 2.5 200 to a 200 V8 you probably did gain some performance, but going from a 3.0 2 stroke to a Mercury 4 stroke often looses a few MPH.
