Mr. Cool Mini Split DIY: Not heating properly

Installed Mr. Cool Mini split last year. It is a DIY. Easy to install and had electrican do the wiring. Heat was great last year and AC this summer was fantastic. This season, having issues all over. Not going above 60 degrees. Enters defrost mode constantly, and has a slight drip on one side. Anyone have any experience with these and some of the issues? I hear HVAC guys won't work on them since they are DIY, but was not aware of that issue at time of purchase.

I can understand why a lot of hvac guys won't work on a dyi install. First thing i would do is pull the refrigerant out and pressure test with nitrogen. 90% of issues with mini splits are install or leak related.

In my experience, across most mfg's- leaking refrigerant (flares most of the time), dirty evap/filter, or clogged drains are 90% of our service calls with minisplits.

Was this a precharged system or one that required evacuation?

Post #3 sums it up. It’s probably low on refrigerant due to a leak at the connections. Most flares are not done with proper tools and the connection should have nylog or some sort of connection approved material on the male side.

I have installed several Mr. Cool mini splits with no issues. (so far).
I believe all of these units come pre charged and the only tools required for the flare connections are two open end wrenches.

I have installed two and both are flawless. Any brand can put out a bad one every now and then. So I still stick with the leak theory or some how some part when vacuumed did not seal. If it ever worked correctly it simply has a leak.

Most issues relate to refrigerant issues. Critical on installing for and low micron evacuation and pressurized the line and evaporator. Occasionally you can have sensor and board issues. The flare nuts on refrigerant line connections on a new system are highly probable for a leak. It doesnt take much of a refrigerant leak, just a few ounces kills performance. They are supposed to torqued to certain specs per size. The have wrenches made specifically for that purpose.

If this is the case, I would be very surprised if most homeowners are using torque wrenches on those flares. And then if a flare is to be made, how many are using a 37-vs-45* orbital flare cone.

Got two units. Flares are factory made. One is 3 years old and working great. The other is only 6 months old and currently keeping me warm as I type. If it just not getting warm enough it’s a good chance it is low on refrigerant. But can be other things. Testing connections is a must when installing.
