    Ice Machine for garage

Looking at buying an ice machine for my garage. It would only need to make 50lb or so a day max....Anyone have recommendations? Prices vary drastically......Thinking I could tie it in to my main line going to my water heater since its in my garage?

i have a manitowic QD-0132A .It produces 150lbs a day but the bin only holds 80lbs. In the shed with the heat and dust is very hard on the machine and in the summer it greatly affects the ice output. Its a real benefit to understand how the machines work in order to troubleshoot cause at some point you will need to. All in all its worth it. In addition to the main water line you will need a drain.

Thanks. Thats overkill for what I need. 20-30lb in the bin is what Im after. Im wondering if keeping it in the hotwater heater room would be feasible.

Hi, check and see if there are any places that buy equipment from restuarants that went out of business. Restuarant equipment is much more heavy duty, industrial strength, then the cheap stuff from Lowe's and like places. Several years ago I picked up a small beer fridge that I use in my game room, still runs like a champ and keeps everything ice cold. It was a Sobe Energy Drink fridge. I paid about $200 for it and I believe they are like $1,400 new.

Most any stand alone refrigeration system is designed to operate at moderate temperatures. If too warm for an ice machine it will decrease capacity and the bin ice loss is greatly increased due to melting. Too cool affects the refrigeration cycle. There are low ambient controls that can be used. Depending on the machine, they possibly will make ice outside of their design, but it will effect overall efficiency and capacity. You'll have to read the operational specs. Incoming water temperature also affects the ice production.

    Hoshizaki km450 or 500.

Self contained, power 120v, water line, and drain line.

Nd since it’s self contained, it will help heat your garage in the winter.

Don’t bother with the little $90 counter top
style…. They make ice but doesn’t hold or keep ice… you put water in it and it’ll make a batch to pour you a couple drinks in about 30 minutes and it’ll keep making until full… you can harvest it as I do but it takes some commitment.. and the ice they make aren’t good enough for an ice chest..

you need to look $500 range and up… that’s one of my next big purchases to come is a real ice maker for my shop…..

Yup, a 5 cu ft freezer for under $200 then add an ice maker for another $200 or less. Let the cubes drop to the bottom or a 5 gallon bucket.

May I ask what you guys do with 50-150 pounds of ice per day?
Hang on. I'll help you in 77 minutes.

I fish a lot.. I’ll throw a couple frozen jugs in the cooler to go fishing.. need ice to ice down the fish when I get home so I can clean them the next day… bag or two of ice every week or twice a week isn’t necessarily expensive but if I can make it for free, why not save that $10-20??

One of the best side benefits of my wife’s coffee shop is the ice maker. It’s a Hoshizaki 700, I think. Anyway, the ability to just pull in and get however much ice I want at anytime is way cool.
the funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it

Ice makers aren’t known for energy efficiency. Depending on your electric rates and how warm the space is, you are looking at at least a few bucks a week to make the ice.

Kinda splitting hairs now, eh? I’m already paying an electric bill and water bill no matter what…

I have a lot of experience with the Manitowoc under counter units, and would highly suggest one.As far as setting one up you will need to run a 3/8 water line,115vac power cord and a place to drain it,as it dumps unused water every cycle. You can drain in into a condensate pump and run the pump line3/8 to a floor drain if needed,

    I went a different route.

I have a double door ice chest like the the convenient stores use .

I have it filled up about 4 times per year from the ice delivery company.

You do know those are metered bills, right? Adding an ice maker will increase your bill. That’s not free.
