Clean the hair out of the drain.
Do not put any cleaners down the drain on a septic system.

Im no plumber. But i have lived in houses with septic tanks my whole life. Still have same one i grew up in. We always used drain cleaners and have never had an issue. That said it was an occasional thing. If you have clogged drains so often it causes issues you may have other issues. Hot water and vinegar will work also.

We had ours pumped about six months ago. We hadn’t had it serviced since 2018. I got to thinking about all the cleaners we used during Covid and was hoping it didn’t effect anything. When they opened it up it was perfectly normal. And that’s with all the bleach, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, and all the other chemicals.

Use a Zip-It Drain Snake or similar hair grabber to clean the drain

This is probably the problem about 75% of the time. Hair usually gets clogged up around the pop up assembly. Take the trap apart and remove the pop assembly, run the water into a bucket and most of the hair will fall out of the drain. Happens all the time with bathtubs also.

If it is only one sink, the p-trap is likely stopped up. A very easy repair. If the trap is pvc, it can be removed, cleaned, reinstalled in 10 minutes, probably with no tools. May take something to break apart if not pvc, still shouldn't be a difficult job.

Take the stopper out and get the hair and gummed up soap out, a little drain cleaner want hurt the septic tank. I use thrift drain cleaner around my house sometimes and recommend it to some customers.

I have to pull the drain plug on my wife's sink about every six months to clean out the accumulated hair and "gunk" that she puts down the drain that clings to the drain plug. The P trap has never been clogged.

Use a toilet plunger. Sink half full of water with drain plug pulled out. Emphasize the upward strokes (vacuum) rather than the downward plunges. You’ll be able to grab a handful of “what not to put down the drain in no time”. Been on septic systems all my life. Best thing I ever learned. Also, drain cleaners don’t hurt a thing.

Never had an issue with drain cleaners but always plunger first and try the drain snake first.

The only thing connected to my septic system are 3 toilets, the rest are on a Gray line. I have 2 tanks and they are pumped out every 5 years

Drain cleaner once in awhile won't hurt as long as it is not a monthly thing and you don't dump a gallon of it down the drain. My system that I installed has been pumped 1 time in 20+ years only because a tree root grew in to the inlet of the tank. It did not need it as it was mostly liquid as it should be with a properly functioning system. I have put over 10 systems in including a campground system and a correctly sized system needs no maintenance as long as the bacteria stay alive. The biggest thing that ruins a system is liquid fabric softener. If you are worried put in some bacteria culture [liquid is best] a week or so after you clean the drain. CJ

For a eco friendly drain cleaner, try adding baking soda down the drain and then add vinegar. Once the foaming has stopped pour about a half gallon of boiling water down the drain. Been using this for years on slow drains and it usually works.

I keep a pack of these under the sink. They're disposable, and cheap. They'll pull out a nasty ball of your beard and your wife's hair that looks like a dead wet rat. Have a plastic bag handy.

If it's still slow after the snake, roebic products are septic safe. Pour some of this down there, but I'd go with the snake first.
