CDM to switch box ignition on 200 EFI (OT153136)

So I bought a 2000 model 200 EFI parts motor mainly for the injectors, plus it had a freshly gone through lower unit. The seller said it was overheating on the left bank and could never figure it out so he bought another motor. I don't know the extent of the damage, if any to the powerhead, and will not until I at least put the starter back on to see the compression. At the time I wasn't aware of the newer type ignition system (CDM). So my question is, which is better? A mechanic told me switch box. If so, can it be converted. This is a complete motor, minus the ECU. It is all together other than the fuel igjection sytem, electronics and cooling components (thermostats and poppet valve) being removed. Thanks in advance!

The CDM ignition is a really good system. Converting would require a donor engine with entire electrical system.

As of last week, CDM's are NLA (No Longer Available). That may change in the future but I suspect Merc has washed their hands of those since we're roughly 15 years post-CDM ignition for US produced engines.

Thanks so much for the reply Euro. Guess I'll have to put that one back together and see what I'm looking at. I've been through hell with my rebuilt '96. But with this forum's help I also have learned alot.

Yeah I have an extra set of switch boxes (cheap <EDIT-Announcements> ones) and good coils just in case. The 2000 motor came with a bunch of extra cdm parts too. I'll get too it eventually and might have an extra running motor
