Smartcraft gauge shorted out. 2nd one in 3 weeks

All you electrical pros and problem solvers, I need your help. In 2 weeks I have now blown 2 Mercury Smartcraft gauges. They have blown in the same spot in each one. See attached picture. I haven't been able to find any shorts. I wish Mercury would've put an inline fuse. To replace these are over $600 each. Your help is appreciated.

Not sure what a new one looks like but the burnt component looks like a capacitor. If so and if it’s an electrolytic capacitor, they have to have the correct polarity.

What SPECIFIC instrument is this (back of the gauge before you disassembled would be helpful)?

    What VERSION?

Where did you obtain the instrument?

How (precisely) is it rigged and wired?

    Who rigged the wiring?
