    Rattle in my lower

First let me say it makes no rattle when running. water pressure is perfect and it runs perfect. gear oil looks good . goes in and out of gear smooth
Prop shaft feels normal. Prop nut is tight.
The noise I'm hearing is when I put it in my shop and tilt it down to level position. its like something is loose in there.
I can shake the motor and hear it but if I trim/tilt up then back down its like the sound of the ball in a shop vac falling in place.
Ill be pulling the lower monday morn but wondering if yall had any thoughts .

I would check your exhaust tuner in the midsection, they break loose and then will move around, especially notable when tilting up and down. Drop the lower unit and look up inside the midsection with a flashlight and something long like long screwdriver to see if the tuner will move around.

    +1 on the exhaust tuner.

Remove gearcase, reach up inside with a long screwdriver and make sure it's secured.

If not, powerhead, adapter plates and tuner come off. Replace studs with Stainless BOLTS, washers and RED LOCTITE.

I also like to use the tuner gasket from the earlier EFI engines to help reduce vibration (doesn't seal anything but it seems to help).

Nylock Nuts retaining the tuner... That's one I'll say was a couple bulbs shy of "bright".

This is the last thing I wanted to deal with. Fishing is starting to pick up and I've been so happy with the engine performance.
What if I keep running it for a while? bad things start happening?

Well ya'll were spot on. 3 studs broken. One stud with a loose nut barely hanging on.

Ill be ordering gaskets in the morn and hope to be back running soon. Question. 4 studs hold this tuner on . what are the other 2 threaded holes that will be covered for? other tuners?
Thinking Ill pick up four bolts the correct length. Should I use a flat washer and a lock washer plus red lock tite? also what is this tuner gasket you speak of Don? I dont see one in the parts diagram.

I drilled my tuner to match the 2 extra holes and put in 6 stainless steel bolts with spring washers....is it required, probably not, but we had it out and had an extra few bolts and washers and it was very easy to drill.

all the above and acquire longer studs so you can double nut = problem solved , dont forget gasket between tuner and plate

oh styler i know, the 782461 gasket was used on earlier engines to create a total seal for the tuner and plate and lessens the vib to the tuner now you dont have to do this BUT i know a guy (initials DW) that frequents this site as well as I that recommends you add this gasket , so i would get that gasket on the way asap , hurry up they're biting man

Joe thank you for that. i got those gaskets and the one you recommended on the way . may take a day er two. Instead of the studs im gonna use bolts, loc washers and red loctite per the elusive DW recommendation. that said your option of longer studs and double nuts look viable also. not sure i care to drill those two xtra holes.

Good to hear you found the issue. I had a similar problem except mine was a wrist pin that eventually tried to come out thru lower unit.

Wrist pin was from the previously blown powerhead....

The thing about this is. Just like Don said this was not engineered correctly. Its pretty sucky (for lack of a better word) for a exhaust tube to just fall off . This is a low hour perfectly running engine .
Had I took it to a dealer it would have been a hefty price tag.

I want to thank you guys for the advice. I would not have known to use that gasket or how to re secure. I probably would have ordered the factory fasteners and been in this same place again down the road.

Couple of questions. I have every thing prepped ad ready to go just waiting on gaskets.
Powerhead gasket was the toughest one to clean but I got it.
Would you guys recommend lightly greasing these gaskets?
Next question : Should I use a blue thread locker for the power head stud nuts?

Blue thread locker, stainless steel spring washers and stainless steel bolts, mine hasn't moved in nearly 5 years.

Not sure about the grease as I didn't add the gasket.

Sorry just reread and you're asking about the power head studs.
