    Part numbers for kits?

    1997 200EFI SN 0G570174

Doing some long overdue maintenance on the old rig. Most immediate issue is overheating. Already picked up thermostats from a local dealer, installed them, and the overheating, both at idle and at higher RPMs (over 3K) is still happening.

I'm in need of the part numbers for the poppet valve kit and the water pump kit assuming they are kitted.

Also, is it feasible to install a water pressure and/or a water temperature gauge for this motor? The boat itself (1997 Astro 2000FS) included very minimal gauges (speedo, tach, and fuel only).

    Best regards!
    Steve

Thanks! I do have an email in to the parts dept there. My login doesn't work and the password reset feature isn't working for me either...

    Anyway...

Dug into the water pump a bit and have a couple of questions.

    1. Is there a part number for a complete kit that includes the base and its needed gaskets in addition to the upper housing, etc kit? I did find a part number for the base (46-8M0077147).
    2. Once I got the upper housing and impeller off, I noticed that there is some lateral movement of the driveshaft into the lower unit. Is this normal or does this indicate that there is wear in a bushing, bearing, or seal that must be addressed?

    Thanks!

no sir order the base seperate and 96148a8 is all you need for water pump ,,,,,movement you see is normal , gear set in that case is designed to push apart when drive shaft rotates

Well, poppet valve parts are finally supposed to arrive today from EM. Said they've been on back order. I'll get the parts installed this afternoon and will likely test it again on the muffs either today or tomorrow morning.

Complete upper and lower water pump kits have been installed and checked at idle speed on muffs last week. IR thermometer show the heads near the #1 & #2 spark plugs are maintaining at 135F-145F after the thermostats open. Temps at the #5 & #6 are pretty low since I'm feeding the garden hose directly from 65F well water.

Question of the day is how to see if the new poppet is working properly while on the muffs. Getting to open water for a real test run is a bit of a road trip from where I live so I'd like to have a level of confidence in the driveway before taking a road trip.

Basically, how fast can the engine be run in neutral without adverse effects, if at all, to see if the new poppet works properly?

Once I get the temperature issue confirmed to fixed, I'm going to move on to intermittent performance issues but I'll make a new thread on that issue.

    Thanks!

Do not exceed around 1800-2000 rpms in neutral. Which is around the rpms the poppet opens. Did you install a water pressure gauge? If so, you can usually see the poppet open, when the poppet starts to open there will be a fluttering of pressure and then a slight drop in pressure and then it will start to build up again as the motor spins faster. Usually when I install a new pump you can see the poppet open near idle as a brand new pump can make enough pressure at idle to open the poppet. This go away as the pump sets in.

    Great information!

Did you install a water pressure gauge?
No. Don't have the details or insight into how/where to do so. Had asked that question early on without any usable reply.

Just to note, I do have the factory service manual for this engine. Didn't come across anything in it that was relevant yet.

I’m not sure about your motor specifically but my 2002 had a brass plug in a threaded hole below the starboard cylinder head where a barbed plug can be installed to plumb in a water pressure gauge. If your motor doesn’t have said plug, you can use the water hoses off the thermostats and plumb in a t-fitting in the hose with a barb fitting to run the pressure tube to a gauge. Mercury and others sell water pressure gauge kits that come with all the parts you need.

1997 hose must be teed into hose from poppet valve to top of block install just prior to fitting on top of block < mandatory

    Thanks, Joe!

I've never taken one of these apart nor have I seen a good diagram/explanation of the water flow through the engine so I can better understand the scheme.

Oh, BTW, there is a poppet valve kit after all. EM sent me the Mercury 803062T1 kit which was an exact fit.

Well, it took an extra while to get the boat on the water. Finally took it out today and ran it about 30 miles. No hint of overheating! :)

I did install a 1-15 psi gauge as Joe recommended in post #9. At 4500-5500 RPMs, it was actually pointed almost straight downward which, if the scale was extrapolated, would be around 17 PSI. Guess I should have gotten the 2-30 PSI gauge but this one is telling my I have good water flow.

Going to put the boat into hibernation for the winter and will get it back out come early spring. It has a reservation on Greer's Ferry Lake in Arkansas for the April 8th total solar eclipse, weather permitting.

    Thanks all!

Pressure will probably drop a little as the pump wears in. But I use a 30 psi gauge but mine rarely goes higher than 15 psi but I don’t have a fast boat either

I prefer the 30 psi kit for this engine model as they often push the 15psi beyond it's mechanical limit.
