    True or not?

Talked to a Marine mechanic today that works for a Marine Dealership, I'm looking at a 98 Bass Boat with a 98 Evinrude carburetor 225hp.The mechanic said that the Engine is in excellent shape with 90lbs compression on all 6 Cylinders, I questioned the Low compression # and he said quote "this is a big bore motor and the compression #s are not high like a regular bore outboard with 110 to 130 compression #'s". Question . Is this true about a Big bore outboard? And if so are the compression#'s of 90 Lb good? I've never heard this ever mentioned before. So I thought I'd reach out to the Bassboatcentral community. Thanks.

Consistency is what you're looking for. 90s across all six should be fine.

Ok. Thanks. But the question is, Is it true about the big bore outboard? He says that the big bore outboard from OMC has 90lbs compression when new. Basically 90lbs was the max on the big bore ( big cylinders) .

I don't believe Evinrude published compression numbers but my understanding is the big loopers do run lower compression. 90 to 100 is not unusual. Seems like my 94' 225 Venom had numbers not much higher than that.

Now, I am not a pro. There are many here much more qualified to answer that question.

Ok. Here's another question, The 98 Evinrude is a carburator engine. Now the original decals are not on the cowling. Is this a Vindicator? Or is this a Venom?

It may be neither it's all in the model number. But if it is and Evinrude high performance it will be a Vindicator. Normal numbers for a 90* looper. 60* motors are close to the same compression. OMC doesn't publish compression numbers.

Also be aware that if you try 3 different compression gauges you'll get 3 sets of results ...

I don't have the model # plate. I'm looking at purchasing this outboard and don't live close enough just to go get a picture. I'll try and see if I can the seller to get me a picture of this.

IMG_20230612_135644.jpg I got lucky and got this from the seller. He made a comment that he thinks the LE stood for Limited Edition.

Definitely doesn't stand for limited edition. Here's a link to a decoder:

Thanks Javelin389. But I'm actually trying to find out if this is a Vindicator or maybe a Venom. It's a carburetor engine. I definitely don't know anything at all about Evinrude outboards, as you can tell. But it also doesn't help that the decals are all not there on this outboard, or again I might be wrong on that as well. The codes you sent are great, but it doesn't tell me, Vindicator or Venom. And I might be completely off base as to what this Evinrude actually is. I think the ST in the # stands for Special Styling. But again not sure. it also appears to be a 98. The date sticker says 97, but the date code says 98.

That model is a Vindicator. 3L 90 degree looper. The Evinrudes had a Vindicator decal (the Johnsons had a Venom decal).
The Vindicators and Venoms are the same motor.
