Question need some advice!!!please 2010 Merc pro xs

Well, my 2010 Merc proxs with 350 hrs just blew the #6 cylinder. Mechanic is saying at minimum if the head is ok will be 5500.00 to fix. If problems exist with the head then he said we are looking close to 10,000. I am not sure of rigging prices but looks like a new 250 proxs is going to run about 23-25 G's. If you were in this situation would you repower or rebuild? I have a pit in my stomach, retired on a fixed income and that's big numbers. Any advice would be appreciated.

Fully dressed power head is in order, this assures the root cause of the failure is corrected. Replace primer bulb and fuel hoses as well.
    Thank You Leon Pugh

four - five years ago for the powerhead alone , well that engine should be pre blue throttle cam GEN1 engine (without required ser number hard to be exact in answer ) just the msrp on the part is north of 14K and it being a GEN 1 engine will need a GEN 2 tuner installed as per calibration of pcm theres another almost 1K then we have to add child labor and we know it aint cheap because to install tuner the complete mid has to come apart and dont forget the + TX , im starting to to see alot of kayaks these days

The first question, I would want to know is “why it blew?” Personally, I would dump it and go 4 stroke.

So, what is the definition of blown? Bad piston? Cylinder wall scored? If that's the case then the power head should be good and the clylinder sleeve can be replaced with a new piston and the rest of the motor freshened up. Is that $5500 including labor? There are aftermarket remanufacturers out there. I sent a Evinrude 225 FICHT to a machine shop with a hole in the block and they repaired it, sleeved the cylinders, and rebuilt with new pistons and other components for just under $4k.

If you would, please take a moment to review the Announcements and be sure to provide the Required Info (serial number) when posting. Thanks!

Suspect we've already talked by phone in the last couple of days, correct?

Ok, so here is where I am at. The #6 piston seized. Currently the plan is to get the head rebored replace pistons and rings, oil pump, new water fuel separator in line, new onboard fule filter and water pump for 5500. No codes where thrown. A fully dressed power head was 9200.00 up to 14,500 from mercury. 350.00 hrs on the engine, always maintained through my local marine shop. My mind was made up that anything over 10,000 i was just going to sell it for parts and buy a new engine with extended warranty. I feel comfortable with the mechanic and feel it is a good price.

Make sure you add new thermostats to that (and if you don't have a Smartcraft Instrument, GET ONE... it might potentially have helped to prevent the failure).

VERY likely that at least the #6 Direct Injector (and potentially the #6 reed block) may require replacement.
