    Ammo season???

Is there an ammo season? A time in the year when your most likely to find what your looking for. A time when the shelves are full of choices?

I finally decided to order my first rifle. I'm a bowhunter and live in a shotgun only county. But recently started hunting in rifle counties. Ive been debating a rifle for a few years and after my experience in DE the other day I knew it was time. My experience was me learning that the hunting rifle that I was looking to buy was illegal in DE, I was shocked, why would a Benelli be illegal. Simply because its a semi auto. Fortunately still legal in MD, but who knows how long that lasts.

Anyways, I've been trying to buy a variety of ammo to see what I like and what the gun likes. There's alot of "out of stock" varieties that I would like to try. So is there a time of year that's best for the shelves to be stocked, or am I gonna just have to try and check online on a regular basis?

No "season" for ammunition. Get it where and when you can.

There is a run on popular hunting ammo as each season approaches, takes a but for each store to restock after it sometimes.

What caliber rifle are you getting? Some seem to have readily available ammo, and some calibers are still hard to find. I haven’t seen .338 Win Mag ammo on the shelf for over a year now. 6.5 Creedmoor is stacked up everywhere.

    308.

I was hoping to be able to compare types of bullet in different weights across different brands and be able to do apples to apples to apples comparisons. Looks like I can do apples, to pears, to oranges comparisons. I guess it will take time to find all the apples, all the pears and all the oranges. So far I have 3 fedex and ups deliveries from different online retailers to get me started.

Of course, I'm probably over thinking it considering I expect most of my shots to happen under 100yds with an occastional 150-200yd shot

Ammo manufacturers are just starting to catch up to demand on most popular calibers. You should be able to find plenty of .308 ammo.

Yes you are overthinking it. Just go buy some 150gr and go shooting.

Click “in stock only”. Dozens of choices available in stock here and at other online retailers. https://www.targetsportsusa.com/308-...mmo-c-101.aspx
Or do you live in a state that has banned online ammo sales?

I can buy online. Strangely though I had to show ID and sign for turky shot but nothing for the 308 ammo.

If you're just looking for a suitable round for hunting, I'd start with a box of Hornady Whitetail and go from there. Remember to keep your barrel cool. Many hunting rifles off the shelf (esp. lightweight models) can only take 3-4 rounds before they warm up and start to wander. Testing a bunch of ammo through a mtn. rifle can be a long process. Better bring something else to pass the time while letting it cool.

My dad came up with a pretty nice way of dealing with this issue. He found a 3" wide x 2" thick x 18" long block of aluminum that had a V notch cut into all the way down the length of the block. It doesn't weigh a whole lot and it makes for a nice heat sink for lighter weigh barrels. Seems to cut a bit of the cooling time off. We also set our suppressors on it when we are shooting and it helps with that too.

That's interesting. This topic is probably worthy of it's own thread so I'll carry it over to a fresh one.

Real hard to find 280 Ackley Improved ammo anywhere, ended up paying mega bucks to get custom handloads, around here 308 win, 270 win, 6.5 Creedmore, 30.06, 7mm Rem are everywhere.

I am surprised that you can find any ammo for an AI chamber. That is the realm of handloaders.

.280 AI is a SAAMI accepted cartridge and is loaded commercially, albeit somewhat sporadically.

.308 being a Nato round seems to be very abundant around these parts.
