Being a roller coaster would be an understatement about the fishing on Amistad the past few weeks...
Weekly fronts passing through with warm spells and high winds in between has been tough. Water level is still a bit above full pool. With temps ranging anywhere from 60-69 in most areas I am fishing.
Catches have ranged from 15 fish days to 69 being the best I remember the past few weeks. We have been catching fish in all stages of the spawn. Many fish up the river have spawned and I have seen a lot of fry up shallow. Big bass for the last couple weeks was an 8lb 7oz fish with some 7s mixed in. When I get my camera downloaded Ill post some pics.
During the warm spells xcite swimbaits, jerkbaits, cranks (shad colors), and txrig worms and lizards have been doing most of the damage. In deeper water I have been throwing bigger txrigs (10" Maximus and Powerworms in wat/red), crigs, and jigs. Small tx rigged strike king craws are what we have been bed fishing with. Bites have been slow during the fronts and we have really had to keep the plastic on the bottom to get bit (not bouncing it up just basically dragging it in).
I got a good ledge bite this last week on tx rigged worms and lizards with the boat sitting in 80-100+ ft throwing up into 4-10ft bushes.
We really need a good couple weeks of solid warm weather and I think the swimbait and topwater bite will really take off. There are finally quite a few perch/sunfish moved up shallow in the river.
As always feel free to give me a call if you some info on patterns to get you started on Amistad.
