150 johnson gt prop ???

Posted on here awhile ago about my '87 johnson 150gt and how my rpms were lower then desired.. everyone told me my shooter prop was junk and that i should get a new prop in a little lower pitch. I just got my 23x13.5 renegade prop today to replace my 25x13.25 shooter. it came with what is called a OMC weed ring, wondering if i should put it on the prop and run it with it initially, or if i should set it up without similar to how my shooter was set up.. what are the benifits/negatives of using this ring? Better or worse hole shot? better or worse top end? no effect?

OK here is the secret with the weed ring and the gade. If you can get out of the hole with out the weed ring then don't install it. If you can't then do put it in. The gade's exhaust gases come over the barrel and let the prop cavitate to let the motor spin up. Too much cavitation causes the prop to loose its bite so voila' the weed ring to block some of the exhaust gas from blowing past the blades.

I have never needed it on either one of my boats, and my brother in law doesn't need one on his Ranger.
